Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking nearly $15 billion worth of industrial projects under construction in North Carolina. The projects cover an array of sectors, including electric vehicle (EV) batteries, pet food, distribution centers and more. The Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry leads the state in the overall value of construction, with more than $6.5 billion worth of projects underway.
Among the top pharma projects in North Carolina is the construction of a new campus for Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) (Indianapolis, Indiana) in Concord, on the site of an old Philip Morris campus. The project consists of constructing six buildings totaling 800,000 square feet, including biologic manufacturing (fill/finish), warehousing, packaging space, a quality control lab, a central utility and office space. General contractor Gilbane Building Company (Providence, Rhode Island) broke ground on the project late last year, and it is expected to be completed in late 2025. According to local news media, the Concord facility will develop medications for ailments like diabetes, obesity and Alzheimer's disease. After the Pharmaceutical Industry, the Industrial Manufacturing Industry has the highest overall project value for North Carolina. The EV revolution is sweeping the U.S. automotive landscape, and North Carolina is lending its support. Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM) (Toyota City, Japan) is establishing a battery-manufacturing plant in Liberty, North Carolina, for its hybrid and fully electric vehicles.
It's the carmaker's first battery plant in North America. According to local news media, Toyota had been interested in the project site before, but opted instead for Alabama as the location for an automotive assembly plant. Upon completion, which is expected in 2025, the facility will feature six production lines, including four supporting battery production for hybrid electric vehicles and two for battery electric vehicles. The state also features several warehousing and distribution projects, such United Parcel Service Incorporated's (UPS) (NYSE:UPS) (Atlanta, Georgia) grassroot facility in Mebane, about 45 northwest of Raleigh. The project kicked off in 2021 and included demolishing an existing building, before constructing a 525,000-square-foot distribution center building that includes an automotive shop, vehicle wash bay and customer center. Construction is expected to be completed later this year, with an initial capacity to process 15,000 packages per hour, ramping up to 30,000 packages per hour in 2024. The project potentially could be followed by two subsequent phases of construction, with Phase II including a 225,000-square-foot building addition. Subscribers can click here for related reports.
Renewable energy projects also are present in the state. SunEnergy1 LLC (Stamford, Connecticut) earlier this year began work on the first phase of a solar farm in Gaston. The plant will use panels on a ground-mounted, single-axis tracking system to obtain a nameplate generating capacity of 120 megawatts. The project is expected to be completed early next year. The pet food industry has been booming in the U.S., and Nestle Purina PetCare Company (Saint Louis, Missouri) has become one of the strongest Food & Beverage spenders. Near the Virginia border, the company is converting a former brewery into a dry dog and cat food production plant in Eden, North Carolina. Nestle Purina is aiming for zero environmental impact from company operations by 2030; the Eden facility will incorporate production processes designed to recover and reuse heat and water, and is aiming for zero waste to be sent for disposal.
In addition, Nestle Purina is striving to make the facility 100% powered by renewable electricity "in the shortest practical timeframe," according to a company press release. The project is expected to wrap up soon. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for the project report.
In Asheville, Pratt & Whitney (East Hartford, Connecticut) is nearing completion of a grassroot casting foundry and manufacturing plant. The project includes construction of a 1.2 million-square-foot facility, of which 850,000 square feet will be manufacturing space to house an advanced casting foundry to produce turbine airfoils. Construction kicked off last year and is expected to be completed this summer. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Metals & Minerals Project Database can click here for the report.
