Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Canadian public utility Hydro-Quebec (Montreal, Quebec) said last week it has commissioned the last of four generating stations at its Romaine hydropower complex in Quebec. Industrial Info is tracking US$4.7 billion worth of projects from Hydro-Quebec, with US$3.5 billion attributed to transmission and distribution (T&D) projects and US$1.2 billion attributed to hydropower. The largest transmission project is a line designed to provide hydropower to New York City.
Hydro-Quebec is the fourth-largest hydropower producer in the world. The Romaine complex has an installed capacity of 1,550 megawatts (MW) and annual energy output of 8 terrawatt-hours, according to a company press release. Construction of the complex started in 2009, and the total project cost reached US$7.4 billion. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Plant Database can click here to see profiles on the complex's four generating stations.
According to Hydro-Quebec's latest financial results, the company invested about C$2 billion (US$1.4 billion) in the first half of 2023, which was essentially flat compared to the same six-month period in 2022. "More than two-thirds of this year's investment has been allocated to major projects aimed at ensuring the reliability and long-term operability of the company's generation, transmission and distribution assets."
The company's projects related to construction of the Champlain Hudson Power Express Transmission Line total US$3 billion in investment. The high-voltage, direct-current (HVDC) line consists of both underground and underwater portions to provide more than 1,000 MW of renewable energy, including hydropower, to New York City. The line will run more than 300 miles from a connection point at Hydro-Quebec's existing Hertel Substation in Montreal, at the U.S.-Canada border, south through Lake Champlain, along and under the Hudson River and end at a new converter station in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens. It will be supported by a 36-mile interconnection line.
Construction of the two lines and an upgrade of the Hertel Substation kicked off in August, with completion expected in 2026; construction of the Astoria Substation also is underway, with completion expected in 2024. Kiewit Corporation (Lenexa, Kansas) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services for all related projects.
Hydro-Quebec's other projects under construction include two major hydropower projects. A US$615 million project at its Rapide-Blanc Generation Station involves replacing the station's six hydro turbine generator sets. According to the company website, it also entails refurbishing the water intake gates, draft tubes, switchgears, control gears, auxiliary mechanical equipment, auxiliary transformers and the station building. The project is expected to wrap up in 2026.
Also underway is the US$570 million renovation and modernization program at its Carillon Generating Station, which includes repairing and replacing the station's six hydraulic passages as well as constructing new intake gates, among other work. The project is expected to be completed in 2027. Subscribers can read detailed information on the Rapide-Blanc and Carillon projects.
The most recent data from Statistics Canada, the Canada government's statistics arm, show hydropower accounted for about 55% of the country's total electricity generation in July.
