Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While the name "Kansas" may invoke images of vast plains of wheat fields, the state is belying this reputation with a significant amount of large industrial projects underway. Industrial Info is tracking more than $6.5 billion worth of projects under construction in Kansas. The state's position in agriculture leads its spending in the Food & Beverage Industry to be high, although the Industrial Manufacturing Industry is propelled to the state's leading spending position, thanks in large part to an automotive battery plant.

The lithium-ion battery plant in question is being constructed for Panasonic Corporation (Osaka, Japan) in De Soto. General contractors Turner Construction Company (New York, New York) and Yates Construction (Philadelphia, Mississippi) broke ground on the facility early last year and are expected to be completed in early 2025, when the facility will begin ramping up to full production of 30 gigawatt-hours of batteries annually for Tesla Incorporated (NASDAQ:TSLA) (Austin, Texas). Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for more information on the project.

After the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, the Food & Beverage Industry leads Kansas in spending, but one manufacturing project segues between the two sectors. Camso Incorporated manufactures tires, tracks and track systems for a range of uses, including agricultural and construction equipment. Earlier this year, the company kicked off construction of a building expansion at its plant in Junction City that will facilitate an increase in its production of track systems, much of which will go toward agricultural equipment. General contractor KBS Constructors Incorporated (Topeka, Kansas) is expected to wrap up the project toward the end of next year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

The two components projects account for much of Kansas' spending in the manufacturing sector, and many of the remaining highest-value projects are for the Food & Beverage Industry, which has more than $2 billion worth of projects under construction in the state. Hilmar Cheese Company (Hilmar, California) is expanding its reach by opening a cheese and whey production facility near Dodge City. The 600,000-square-foot plant will employ the latest sustainability technologies to help the U.S. dairy sector meet its net-zero emissions goals by 2050 and also will be equipped to minimize water use. The project is on track to be completed later this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for more details.

Other Food & Beverage Industry projects in Kansas include a grassroot soybean processing facility in Cherryvale, in the southeast of the state. As renewable diesel production gains ground in the U.S., the demand for soybean oil to use for feedstock is growing, and Bartlett and Company (Kansas City, Missouri) is expanding in this market with the construction of the Cherryvale plant, which began last year. Upon completion, which is expected this summer, the facility will be able to process more than 38 million bushels of soybeans per year, producing soybean meal and refined oil. Moving into a slightly different realm of the Food & Beverage Industry, chocolate lovers will be delighted to know that Mars Incorporated (McLean, Virginia) is expanding its confectionary plant in Topeka to further production of some of the company's most iconic candy bars. Work began earlier this year and includes an upgrade of an existing line for the production of Snickers bars. The building expansion will house two new production lines, bringing 3 Musketeers and Milky Way chocolate bars to the plant's output. The project is expected to be completed in mid-2025. Subscribers can learn by viewing the project report.
