Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While Kentucky boasts a varied industrial profile, its automotive sector rises head and shoulders above other segments in regard to the state's projects currently under construction. Of Kentucky's more than $13.6 billion of industrial projects in an active construction phase, more than half of this value comes from the automotive sector, primarily from developments for electric vehicles (EVs).

The two largest automotive projects in Kentucky, with a combined value of more than $5 billion, are not for vehicles themselves, but for EV batteries. A joint venture of Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) and SK Innovation (Seoul, South Korea), BlueOvalSK, is constructing a battery and EV assembly plant in Glendale, about 50 miles south of Louisville. Construction of the 4 million-square-foot plant is being partially subsidized by funds from the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Construction began in 2022, and Phase I is expected to be completed in the second half of next year. The facility will be able to produce approximately 43 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of batteries per year, which will be used to power electric versions of Ford's F-Series pickups and other upcoming Ford and Lincoln EVs.

As Phase I of the plant begins winding down next year, construction of a second phase of the plant is planned to begin, doubling the size of the production facility and increasing production to a combined 86 GWh of batteries per year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the project reports on Phase I and Phase II.

Construction of a slightly smaller EV battery plant also is underway in Bowling Green, where Envision-AESC LLC (Smyrna, Tennessee) is constructing a 3 million-square-foot factory that will produce 30 GWh of batteries when completed in 2025. The factory will produce cells and modules for various models from different vehicle manufacturers and will provide the latest in battery technology with the plant's cells having 30% more energy density, reducing charging time and increasing range and efficiency. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

While lithium-ion batteries are taking most of the market share for EV batteries and battery energy storage systems, EnerVenue Incorporated (Fremont, California) is hoping to be on the cutting edge for a new type of battery as it begins the completion process for its nickel-hydrogen energy storage vessel plant in Shelby County, Kentucky. The 1 million-square-foot facility will allow EnerVenue to design and test its batteries and will provide up to 1 GWh per year of production capacity. Subscribers can click here to learn more.

Kentucky's Power Industry ranks second in regard to total investments, coming in with more than $2 billion in projects presently under construction, most of which are solar projects. Industrial Info is tracking more than 1 gigawatt worth of solar projects under construction in the state, most of the major ones having about 200 megawatts (MW) or more capacity. Among the largest of these is NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) Green River photovoltaic plant near Irvington. Construction began late last year and is expected to last about a year in total. The facility will use nearly 720,000 bifacial thin-film solar panels on a fixed tilt tracking system to provide about 200 MW of emissions-free energy when completed toward the end of this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the related project report.

NextEra also began work on the larger Sebree solar plant near Robards in the west of the state earlier this year. This facility will use more than 850,000 panels to generate about 250 MW of clean energy. Construction is expected to be completed next summer. Subscribers can click here to learn more.

The Metals & Minerals Industry rounds out Kentucky's top three industries for the value of under-construction projects with $1.6 billion worth. North American Stainless Company (Ghent, Kentucky) is underway with an expansion of its 1.4 million ton-per-year stainless steel mill in Ghent by installing a new 1,350-millimeter reverse cold rolling mill and temper mill as well as expanding the melt shop building and making way for a new crane that will be able to increase production capacity by 200,000 tons annually. The project is expected to be completed next summer. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Metals & Minerals Project Database can click here for more details on the project.
