Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Air Liquide S.A. (Paris, France) saw a rebound in 2023, with net profits of 3.08 billion euros (US$3.33 billion) representing an 11.6% increase from full-year 2022. The growth was driven by its business for industrial gases and related services in the Americas, where the company is building out its capacity to address rising demand for oxygen, nitrogen and other products. Its role in the development of renewable natural gas (RNG) and clean hydrogen is giving it a boost in an emerging sector. Industrial Info is tracking more than $3 billion worth of active and planned projects involving Air Liquide in North America, the bulk of which is for industrial and agricultural chemicals.

"The group's performance was characterized by an increase in sales on a comparable basis, an improvement in its operating margin excluding the energy impact, and an accelerating investment momentum," said Francois Jackow, the chief executive officer of Air Liquide, in a earnings-related press release.
Air Liquide, which operates the world's largest oxygen production plant in South Africa, expects to finish construction in the coming months on a $180 million air separation plant in Port Allen, Louisiana, which is designed to produce 2,500 tons per day of oxygen for Methanex Corporation's (NASDAQ:MEOH) (Vancouver, British Columbia) $1.35 billion Geismar 3 Methanol Unit at its nearby methanol complex. The project follows several air separation units started up in Europe and the U.S. in 2023. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Chemical Processing Project Databases can read detailed reports on the air separation plant and methanol unit.
In Canada, Air Liquide is preparing to begin work on a US$150 million air-separation unit addition at its hydrogen plant in Becancour, Quebec, which will include new infrastructure for the facility. The unit will produce 850 tons per day of oxygen, with smaller amounts of nitrogen and argon, mainly for manufacturers of battery components for electric vehicles. The air separator will be powered by renewable energy from hydropower sources. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
Pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG) is getting attention amid the drive for clean energy, and Air Liquide is preparing to finish construction this summer on a $25 million RNG plant in Rockford, Illinois. The plant is located at the existing Winnebago Landfill, which is owned by Waste Connections (The Woodlands, Texas). Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
Air Liquide also is part of a consortium of companies evaluating sites for a hydrogen and ammonia production facility on the U.S. Gulf Coast. President Joe Biden's administration awarded $1.2 billion of federal grants in mid-October to the project, which is spearheaded by LyondellBasell Industries NV (NYSE:LYB) (Rotterdam, Netherlands). For more information, see March 20, 2023, article - LyondellBasell's Houston Refinery Could Become Home to Hydrogen Hub.
Air Liquide is facing a different set of challenges in Mexico, where the administration of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador ordered the expropriation of a hydrogen plant earlier this month at the Miguel Hidalgo Refinery in Tula De Allende, Hidalgo, according to Reuters. The refinery, which is operated by Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) (Mexico City), obtains hydrogen from the plant, operated by Air Liquide, under a 20-year contract signed in 2017. Mexico's energy ministry cited concerns related to motor-fuel production at the Tula Refinery, but did not say whether Air Liquide would be compensated for the plant's seizure.
Pemex and Air Liquide began construction in early 2023 on an additional, US$150 million hydrogen unit at the Miguel Hidalgo Refinery, which would allow refinery to maximize its gasoline and diesel yields with minimal residual production. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report and plant profile.
