State entities are taking steps to further expand energy storage for renewable energy; Governor Gavin Newsom's 2022-23 fiscal budget includes $140 million in funding for long-duration storage, which is defined as energy storage that can power the grid for 10 hours or more. According to the budget text, in addition to helping with grid resiliency in the context of emergencies, including wildfires, the investment will "provide a decarbonized complement to intermittent renewables, which will provide the state with additional energy storage options during periods of low renewable power availability."
In February, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) (San Francisco) ordered the state's electric generators to procure 15,000 MW of new energy storage by 2032.
