Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--One of the largest passenger rail developments in Australia has reached a major milestone with the announcement of its preferred operating consortium. The Northwest Rapid Transit Consortium (NRT) consists of MRT Corporation (Hong Kong), John Holland (Sydney), Leighton Contractors (Sydney), UGL Rail Services (Sydney) and Plenary Group (Sydney).

The consortium contract, which is expected to be awarded later this year, is one of three contracts for the development of the AU$8.3 billion (US$7.8 billion) North West Rail Link in Sydney.

The North West Rail Link will be the first fully automated rapid transit rail system in Australia. Operating on 56 kilometers (km) of tracks, the rapid transit trains will serve a region with one of Australia's highest passenger rail usage levels, with trains that will operate at least every five minutes in the peak--or 12 trains an hour.

Work already has begun on the 4-km elevated Skytrain project, the contract for which was awarded to the Impregilo-Salini joint venture (Sydney). The AU$340 million (US$321 million) contract involves building an 11-meter-wide deck between Bella Vista and Rouse Hill in Sydney, along with other surface works, including bridges, embankments and railway cuttings. The Skytrain concept was chosen for this section of the route to avoid the physical division that often comes with ground-level rail lines; the Skytrain also minimizes environmental impacts on flood plains.

The North West Rail Link also includes the longest railway tunnels to be built in Australia. The US$1.15 billion contract to bore 15 km of tunnels was awarded to the Thiess John Holland Dragados joint venture (Sydney) last year, and the first of four specially designed tunnel boring machines is expected to be in the ground by October, with the second expected to follow later in the year.

Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said: "We are really getting moving with this important project. The tunneling phase of construction will support around 900 jobs, with a major recruitment drive now under way. This is great news for jobseekers in Western Sydney."

Modeled on the MRT system of Singapore, the North West Rail Link will serve the almost 600,000 residents of Sydney's North Western Suburbs when it opens in 2019.
