Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A joint venture partnership recently started work on the first phase of a windfarm power station in the state of Coahuila in northeastern Mexico. The partnership includes Mexican mining company Industrias Penoles, SA de CV (Mexico City) and Spain's EDP Renovaveis (Madrid).

The windfarm will be located about 37 km north of a town called General Cepeda. The estimated total investment value (TIV) is roughly $350 million dollars.

The special-purpose company, Eolica de Coahuila, SA de CV, will carry out this project in a design, construction & operation scheme. It will include two phases that will consist of 49 Gamesa (Zamudio, Spain) G-114 2MW wind turbines each. Once completed, the windfarm power station will provide a total of about 199.5 megawatts (MW) on an 11,000 acre-site and will generate approximately 763 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually. The windfarm will provide clean energy for Industrias Penoles operations, and through the national grid it will supply enough electricity for approximately 100,000 homes, including commercial and industrial sectors. It will prevent about 381,424 metric tons of carbon dioxide C02 emissions a year.

This will be the largest windfarm project in the region and will have a significant and positive impact on the state of Coahuila, as it will contribute to the new energy reform laws in development for the increase of installed renewable energy resources for the country. EDP Renovaveis will utilize its offices in Portugal and its EDP Renewables North America LLC office located in Houston, Texas to oversee the development of this project. The project is estimated to create about 300 site preparation and construction jobs. About 5-12 permanent positions will be created for labor security, operation and maintenance of the power station.

This project broke ground (first phase) in October 2015. The windfarm is slated for full operations sometime between late 2016 or early 2017, if all goes well.
