Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Windfarm development specialist wpd GmbH & Company KG (Bremen, Germany) has started construction on the 111-megawatt (MW) Nordergründe offshore windfarm in Germany's North Sea.
The company announced this week that the first monopile deep foundation for the windfarm was laid by contractor, Ambau GmbH (Mellensee, Germany). There will 18 monopiles in total, which have a diameter of 5.5 metres, measure 56 metres long and weigh in at 370 tonnes each. They will support 18 6.2M126 model turbines, rated at 6.2 MW each, from Senvion SE (FWB: RPW) (Hamburg, Germany), formerly known as REpower Systems. Nordergründe will cost around $540 million to construct.
"We are delighted with our positive start at the construction site," said Achim Berge Olsen, managing director of wpd offshore GmbH. "The team has done an excellent job so that following our extensive preparations we have now been able to start work on the foundation structures. And commissioning of the wind farm is planned for the end of 2016."
Nordergründe is located in water depths of up to 10 metres within the 12-mile zone of the German North Sea and situated 15 kilometres northeast of the island of Wangerooge. Power will be transmitted by cabling laid by German grid operator, TenneT TSO BV (Arnhem, Netherlands).
The windfarm forms part of Germany's big push into the offshore wind sector in recent years. Germany overtook the U.K. last year as the leading offshore windfarm nation in 2015, installing 2,282 MW of capacity. This was a long way ahead of the U.K. and the Netherlands, which installed 556 MW and 180 MW, respectively. The U.K. remains Europe's largest offshore wind market with more than 5,000 MW of offshore wind installed, compared to Germany's total of 3,295 MW, but the gap is closing fast.
Industrial Info reported last month on Germany's plan to offer two additional wind tenders in 2017. The new offshore draft plan aims to have 7.7 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity by 2020, 1.2 GW higher than previous goals of 6.5 GW in the same period.
