COVID-19 Impact Report: Southeast Asia's Cement Industry Hard Hit by Pandemic

Southeast Asia's cement sector has been hard hit by COVID-19 as producers in several countries have temporarily suspended plant operations due to government-imposed lockdowns and declining demand. Contractors are scrambling to finish maintenance and rebuild projects that were begun earlier this year so that the plants can be placed under care and maintenance for the duration of the lockdowns.

Disruption in the equipment supply chain and lack of personnel have pushed expansion project schedules months into the future, with planned kickoffs of several projects now pushed into 2021.

Malaysia
Eighteen cement facilities have temporarily suspended operations due to the nationwide lockdown and are currently completing maintenance earlier or setting up care-and-maintenance protocols. Malaysia Steel shuttered two of its steel mills, while OCI Malaysia is running its polysilicon smelter in Sarawak at 30% capacity. Industrial Info is following 18 cement facilities in Malaysia. Vietnam
Cement companies are delaying expansion plans for 3 to 12 months and moving kickoff schedules to next year as Vietnam gradually implements its lockdown. Industrial Info is tracking 85 cement facilities in Vietnam. Click here for a list. Click here for affected projects.

Philippines
All cement facilities on the main northern island of Luzon are shuttered, as the government has extended its "Enhanced Community Quarantine." Industrial info is tracking 10 cement plants in the Philippines that are shuttered due to the pandemic. Click here for a list.
