Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--North and South Dakota have economies that encompass several sectors, which is reflected in the variety of industrial project activity seen in the states. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $4.7 billion worth of projects that are under construction in the two states, ranging from soybean processing plants to power facilities.
Agriculture plays a big role in the economies of both North and South Dakota, and among the largest projects for each state are soybean-processing facilities. The demand for soybean oil has escalated rapidly in recent years along with the demand for renewable diesel, for which soybean oil can be used as a feedstock.
CGB Enterprises Incorporated (Covington, Louisiana) is constructing a grassroot processing facility near Casselton, North Dakota, to handle about 45 million bushels of soybeans per year. General contractor McGough Construction Incorporated is expected to complete the plant in the second half of next year.
South Dakota is getting its own grassroot soybean processing plant. The appropriately named South Dakota Soybean Processors (Volga, South Dakota) only recently broke ground on what will be a new plant in Mitchell, about 70 miles west of Sioux Falls. Completion is expected in the summer of 2025, when the facility will begin ramping up its processing capacity to 35 million bushels per year.

Another large Food & Beverage project involves expansion of Valley Queen Cheese Factory Incorporated's (Milbank, South Dakota) dairy plant in Millbank. Construction on the approximately 200,000-square-foot building addition began in 2022 and will provide the ability to process an additional 3 million pounds of milk each day to produce 125 million more pounds of cheese each year. The project is expected to be completed early next year and is expected to eventually add about 140 jobs. Subscribers can click here for more details.
North Dakota is one of the leading of the leading producers of oil in the U.S., as well as natural gas. To curb flaring, gas transmission capacity often is added to areas of high oil production. WBI Energy (Bismarck, North Dakota) is doing just this by establishing a grassroot natural gas pipeline from North Dakota's Bakken Shale to Emerson, Manitoba. The North Dakota section of the line will run about 195 miles from near Tioga to the Minnesota border. The 24-inch-diameter line will be able to transport up to 600 million cubic feet per day of natural gas. The North Dakota section is expected to be completed next summer. The ethanol sector is a heavy producer of greenhouse gases, but Blue Flint Ethanol LLC (Underwood, North Dakota) is taking aim at emissions by installing a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) system at its plant in Underwood. About 200,000 tons per year of carbon dioxide will be captured at the plant and injected into nearby underground formations. In 2020, Blue Flint received a $3.4 million grant toward the project and began work on it in 2022. The CCS system is expected to be in place and operational by early next year. South Dakota also is receiving renewable energy in the form of a few solar power projects. Among these is National Grid plc's (NYSE:NGG) (London, England) grassroot Wild Springs solar plant in New Underwood. Construction kicked off earlier this year and entails installing about 340,000 solar panels. Upon completion, which is expected before the end of the year, the facility will be able to provide 128 megawatts of emissions-free power generation.
