Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Phase V of Ecuador's Arturo Salazar Orrego hydroelectric power plant (Saymirin) is nearly ready to begin commercial operations. The 7.52-megawatt (MW) project will be connected to the national grid within 60 days, officials with project owner Generadora del Austro S.A. (Elecaustro) (Cuenca, Ecuador) told Industrial Info.

Located between the Chulco and Machangara rivers, the Saymirin power plant has a total capacity of 15.552 MW, and was built in four phases called Saymirin I, II, III and IV.
Phase I is equipped with two Pelton turbine generators, manufactured by AEG (Frankfurt, Germany), each with a generating capacity of 1.256 MW. Phase II also has two AEG Pelton turbine generator sets with a capacity of 1.96 MW per turbine. Phases III and IV each comprise one 4.56-MW turbine, with two BBC (Baden, Switzerland) generators.
Civil construction on Phase V began in April 2012. It includes two Pelton units provided by Delta Delfini & Cia S.A. (Guayaquil, Ecuador), with an effective capacity of 3.76 MW per turbine.
One month before commercial operations begin, the authorities plan to remove four older Pelton AEG turbines from operation as their lifespans have ended.
The Saymirin project is one of four active Elecaustro projects. These projects include the 22-MW Multiple Soldados-Yanuncay Hydro Power Station (Cuenca, Ecuador), which will begin construction during the first quarter of 2015; the Ocaña II Hydroelectric Power station, which will add 22 MW more to the local grid; the Ocaña I Hydrolectric Power Plant in Cañar, which began operations in 2012, providing 26 MW; and the 50-MW Minas Windfarm, which will be operational in the first quarter of 2017.
Currently, Elecaustro has a total capacity of 60.752 MW and is scheduled to grow to 161.6-MW capacity by 2019.
