Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The implementation of new and renewable energy in Indonesia is stalling, as it is not considered economically competitive with fossil-fuel sources. Nonetheless, the government is trying to expedite the implementation of renewable energy.
Indonesia's National Energy Council said that the problem of renewable energy's price remains, because it has not included the external cost (cost of environmental damage) in fossil energy. For this reason, the National Energy Council suggested carbon pricing to make the price of renewable energy more competitive. Through carbon pricing, fossil energy also can be improved by reducing carbon emissions by upgrading coal; gasifying coal; or transforming it to dimethyl ether or liquid coal.
The National Energy Council also stressed that, in developing renewable energy, it is necessary to create local awareness and further educate communities, particularly in remote areas where geothermal and hydro may help meet the planned renewable energy mix. A joint commitment is needed in accelerating the national energy mix, which includes the support of green funds from various parties in the development of renewable energy and encouraging local governments to immediately complete the provincial Regional Energy General Plan in order to create pride in managing regional energy.
