Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mexico's state-owned Compania Federal de Electricidad (CFE) (Mexico City) plans to expand the 720-megawatt (MW) Cerro Prieto Geothermal Power Station in Baja California, Mexico, to 820 MW by 2012. The plant currently operates 13 generating units equipped with turbines ranging from 25 to 110 MW that were manufactured by Toshiba and Mitsubishi.

CFE inaugurated the plant more than 30 years ago and recently launched an international tender for the expansion. The Cerro Prieto V plant will be equipped with two 50 MW turbines. The project, which is estimated to cost about $200 million, also includes the construction of a 161-kilovolt substation.

Seven international firms have purchased the bidding rules for the tender: Itochu Corporation (Tokyo, Japan), Isolux Ingenieria (Madrid, Spain), Iberdrola Ingenieria y Construccion Mexico (Mexico City), Alstom Mexicana (Mexico City), ICA Fluor Daniel (Mexico City), Prolec GE (Mexico City) and Sumitomo Corporation (Tokyo). Bidding rules are still available, with bids due on July 22. Construction is expected to begin in September with completion set for the first quarter of 2012.

At the moment, two generating units are offline for maintenance and the other four units will be taken offline before September. Unit No. 5 has been offline for about a year because of rehabilitation and is expected to come back online in two weeks. Unit No. 8 is undergoing an annual maintenance and will resume operation before the month ends.
