Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The industrial sector of Minnesota is very busy with a range of projects that are under construction. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $7 billion worth of projects that are underway in the state. Thanks to a large mine restart project, the Metals & Minerals Industry leads Minnesota's present spending, followed by the Industrial Manufacturing Industry.

Taconite is a low-grade iron ore prevalent in Minnesota that was previously considered a waste rock when high-grade iron ore was plentiful. As resources have diminished, miners are once again turning to Minnesota's taconite sector. Mesabi Metallics Company LLC (Nashwauk, Minnesota) is in the process of restarting a Minnesota taconite mine that was closed in 1985. The mine will reopen as a 24 million-ton-per-year open pit mine with a flotation processing plant to produce 7 million tons annually of concentrated iron ore feedstock for a planned pelletizing plant over an eight-year mine life. Work on restarting the mine commenced early last year, while construction of the pelletizing plant is expected to kick off in the fourth quarter of this year. The projects are expected to wrap up in early 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Project Database can learn more by viewing the project reports on the mine restart and pelletizing plant projects.

Elsewhere in the state's Metals & Minerals sector, Spectro Alloys Corporation (Rosemont, Minnesota) is increasing its aluminum-recycling capacity at its complex in Rosemont. According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, only 45% of aluminum beverage cans in Minnesota are recycled, leaving room in the market for additional recycling capacity. Spectro hopes to capitalize on this by constructing an aluminum-recycling expansion comprising a 90,000-square-foot building. The first phase of the project, expected to be finished next summer, will result in 120 million tons of additional recycling capacity at the plant. Spectro will cast the aluminum into billet and sheet ingot. Billet is turned into products like railings, window and door trim and structural components for cars, among other uses, while sheet ingot is used as a feedstock for rolling mills. According to Spectro, the recycled aluminum requires 95% less energy to process compared to new aluminum production. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

In keeping with the state's green moves, utility Xcel Energy Incorporated (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is developing solar power at the site of the Sherburne County (Sherco) coal-fired station. Unit 2 of the plant was shut down on the last day of 2023, while plans call for Unit 1's retirement in 2026, followed by the third and final unit in 2030. To help make up for some of this lost power, Xcel is constructing 460 megawatts (MW) of solar generation near the site. Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) is underway with construction of the East and West blocks of the solar complex, each of which will have 230 MW of generating capacity. The West Block is expected to begin generating later this year, followed by the East Block in 2025, putting both segments online by the time Unit 1 is retired. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the East Block and West Block.

Developing and building natural gas pipelines has become somewhat of a challenge in today's regulatory environment, but MDU Resources Group Incorporated (Bismarck, North Dakota) is progressing with a grassroot pipeline that will carry natural gas from the Bakken Shale in North Dakota into Minnesota. Construction on the Minnesota portion commenced last summer and will result in a 135-mile segment of 24-inch-diameter pipe in the state. The pipeline will be able to transport up to 600 million cubic feet per day of natural gas to an interconnect with the Great Lakes Gas Transmission and Viking Gas Transmission networks near Kittson County. Construction is expected to be completed in the coming months. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Pipelines Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

In the Food & Beverage Industry, protein concentrates have become popular as people look to trim their waistlines and build muscle mass. A Minnesota dairy company, Bongards Creameries Incorporated (Perham, Minnesota), which manufactures cheese, butter and whey products, is building a third whey dryer at its plant in Perham to increase its production of whey protein concentrates. According to the company, a low-temperature processing system produces superior whey proteins in their most natural state. The new unit is expected to begin operating during the first half of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for more details on the project.

Another Minnesota Food & Beverage company is growing its cage-free egg production by taking over and renovating a former egg-production facility in Renville. Rembrandt Foods (Rembrandt, Iowa) announced the closure of its egg facility in the town in 2019 due to an oversupply of eggs and egg products after the U.S. bounced back from an avian flu epidemic. Established egg producer Forsman Farms (Howard Lake, Minnesota) is reviving the site with the removal of some Rembrandt buildings and the construction of four new layer barns and a pullet barn that will house 1.3 million layers in a cage-free environment. Construction began a few months ago and is expected to take about a year in total. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
