Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Nigeria aims to harness its abundant natural gas resources to improve its power-generation capacity and to reduce regular blackouts. Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) (Abuja, Nigeria) plans to add 3.6 gigawatts (GW) of gas-fired power projects by 2031, with the first tranche set for completion in the first quarter of 2025.
NNPC recently started construction on its gas-fired, 1,350-megawatt (MW) Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant, in partnership with China Mechanical Engineering Corporation and General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) subsidiary GE Vernova. The plant, which is to be built in three phases, aims to provide 11% of Nigeria's electricity once fully operational.
