Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--State-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is pushing to revamp one of its idled refineries, but the rest of its refineries remain shut down for want of financing.
All four of NNPC's run-down refineries have been idled since 2020 due to various mechanical issues, forcing the government to try to raise funding to rehabilitate them.
NNPC has four refineries, two at its refining complex in Port Harcourt, and one each in Kaduna and Warri, with a combined installed capacity of 445,000 barrels per day (BBL/d), according to NNPC's website.
Tecnimont Nigeria Limited was picked to rehabilitate NNPC's 210,000-BBL/d Port Harcourt Refinery, but other refineries like Warri and Kaduna still await necessary financing.
The condition of the refineries has driven Nigeria to rely on imports for its refined products.
However the planned completion of Dangote Group's 650,000-BBL/d refinery in Lekki, Nigeria, is expected to extricate the country from its foreign fuel dependency beginning in 2023.
