Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A wildfire in Southern Oregon is wreaking havoc on a critical power transmission corridor linking Oregon and California.

The Bootleg Fire, which has grown to more than 153,000 acres southern Oregon's Fremont-Winema national forest, has reduced California's available power by as much as 5,500 megawatts (MW). The blaze has impacted the California-Oregon Intertie, also known as Path 66. This is a corridor of three parallel 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines linking the California and Oregon power grids. The lines are owned by PG&E Corporation (NYSE:PCG) (San Francisco, California), PacifiCorp (Portland, Oregon), Western Area Power Administration (Lakewood, Colorado) and Transmission Agency of Northern California (Folsom, California).

Damage to the system has forced Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) (Portland, Oregon) to cut its capacity to 428 MW. BPA also announced it has been forced to cut transmission on the Pacific DC Intertie. Crews are prevented from inspecting the lines due to safety concerns.

The strain on California's power supply prompted the California Independent System Operator (ISO) (Folsom) to issue a statewide alert for consumers to conserve electricity in the late afternoon and evening on Monday. The grid operator issued a statewide "Flex Alert" for the entire state, urging consumers to conserve electricity between the peak hours of 4 pm and 9 pm Pacific Daylight Time.

The conservation measures are being taken at a time when temperatures in the Golden State and others parts of the West have soared into the triple digits. Temperatures in California's Death Valley hit 130 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday and were expected to be as high as 113 degrees on Monday.

Rolling blackouts California are possible if conservation efforts are not sufficient, the California ISO warned: "If demand still outstrips supply after a Flex Alert is in effect, the ISO could take the infrequent step of ordering California utilities to spread power outages of relatively short duration to effectively extend available electricity as much as possible.

The California ISO said it also issued a Restricted Maintenance Operations (RMO) for Monday that requires generators to postpone any planned outages for routine equipment maintenance.

On Saturday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order to secure additional power in order to maintain grid stability.

Industrial Info continues to monitor power generation and transmission lines in the path of the fire.
