Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--PJM Interconnection LLC (PJM), an organization that operates the transmission and distribution (T&D) system that services much of the eastern-central U.S., earlier this week asked Talen Energy (Houston, Texas) to postpone the retirement of four fossil fuel-fired units at its H.A. Wagner Generating Station near Baltimore, Maryland, by three years. Although PJM's board approved $5 billion in transmission projects in December to bolster the system's reliability, it says the Wagner units will need to remain operational until the upgrades are completed, which is expected around 2028. Industrial Info is tracking more than $2 billion in active and planned projects from Talen, and more than $11 billion worth of T&D projects in the PJM service area.

Talen announced in 2020 it would cease coal-fired operations at the Wagner plant by the end of 2025, as part of a broader effort to eliminate coal use at all its facilities. It later began to explore plans to close Wagner's Lot 15 Landfill Site to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Coal Combustion Residual Regulations. Last year, Talen announced it would retire three oil-fired units and a natural gas combustion turbine unit at Wagner by June 2025; these four units have a combined generating capacity of 844 megawatts (MW).

However, the PJM board earlier this week said it would need at least some of its latest round of proposed T&D upgrades to be operational before the oil-fired and gas turbine units could be retired, lest the reliability of the T&D system come into question. Demand for the upgrades, which include new substations and power lines, was spurred by aging infrastructure on the grid and the construction of data centers in the area, which require massive amounts of electricity.
Talen's own slate of projects under construction includes the $400 million Nautilus Cryptomine bitcoin data center in Berwick, Pennsylvania, a joint venture with TeraWulf Incorporated (St. Paul, Minnesota). It is expected to consume 48 MW, which will be covered by the nearby Susquehanna Nuclear Power Station. Talen and TeraWulf began construction on the data center in the fourth quarter of 2021 and expect to finish it in the coming months. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
Talen also is considering a proposed, 20-MW battery energy-storage system (BESS) at the Wagner facility. Although the project was announced in mid-2021 as part of an effort to build 1 gigawatt (GW) of BESS projects across three states, it remains in its early exploration phases, where plenty of factors can alter, delay or eliminate the proposed investment. Top Energy Providers Attached to PJM's Efforts
Among the major energy companies planning to construct projects included in PJM's $5 billion T&D package are Dominion Energy Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia), FirstEnergy Corporation (NYSE:FE) (Akron, Ohio), PPL Corporation (NYSE:PPL) (Allentown, Pennsylvania) and NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida). Dominion already is at work on a long list of T&D upgrades across Virginia, including two new substations in eastern Virginia.
The $21 million Lockridge Substation in Sterling, Virginia, is designed to supply a new data center campus to be built in the area, via a two-mile, $11 million double-circuit tie-in. The $29 million Loudoun Substation in Aldie, Virginia, is intended to accommodate a projected increase in demand in the area. Subscribers can read detailed project reports on the Lockridge Substation, its tie-in, and the Loudoun Substation.
