Written by Daniel Graeber for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Receiving its inaugural batch of feedgas in December, Venture Global LNG (NYSE:VG) (Arlington, Virginia) said 29 vessels laden with liquefied natural gas (LNG) left its Plaquemines facility in Louisiana during the first quarter.
Drawing largely from the nearby Haynesville play, Plaquemines took in its first batch of 100 million cubic feet of natural gas for liquefaction in December. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company said it exported 29 cargoes of LNG during the three-month period ending March 31.
The Sabine Pass terminal, operated in Louisiana by Cheniere Energy Incorporated (Houston, Texas), is the busiest facility and the largest by volume, though Plaquemines is already producing well above its design capacity.
Data from IIR Energy show LNG feedgas into the eight functional U.S. LNG export terminals reached 16.1 billion cubic feet on Friday, a slight increase that followed the end of a one-day maintenance period for Sabine Pass.
That's 14% higher than the average expected for this year by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the data arm of the Energy Department.
EIA data show total U.S. LNG exports averaged 15.1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) over the seven-day period ending April 2.
EIA reported Thursday that international demand for natural gas and the steady expansion of the LNG sector supported growth in U.S. LNG exports in every year since deliveries began in 2016. Startup at Plaquemines, implementation of a third stage of liquefaction trains at the Corpus Christi facility and the recent sanctioning of the Golden Pass terminal should drive growth over the next few years, EIA said.
"These facilities have a combined nominal export capacity of 5.3 Bcf/d, up to 6.3 Bcf/d peak capacity, and will expand the existing U.S. LNG export capacity by almost 50% once these projects become fully operational," the EIA stated.
Venture Global added in its filing with the SEC that it delivered 34 cargoes from Calcasieu Pass. IIR Energy finds Calcasieu Pass turning out around 1.7 Bcf/d so far in April, close to its peak design capacity.
The United States became the world leader in exports of LNG in 2022, during President Joe Biden's tenure. Biden paused new permits for LNG while his administration studied the emissions up and down the supply chain. That was later suspended by the courts, and President Donald Trump has made LNG a priority so far in his administration, extending permits and issuing new ones for exports.
Exports since 2022 have supported global energy security in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which saw gas-rich Russia sidelined from energy trade by sanctions. Future growth in LNG could create a tighter market at home, however. The EIA expects LNG exports to increase 14% annually by next year to average 16 Bcf/d, though total U.S. natural gas production expands by only 2.4% by 2026.
