Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--SJV Biodiesel LLC, a joint venture between fuel-ethanol producer Calgren Renewable Fuels LLC (Pixley, California) and biodiesel-technology company JatroDiesel Incorporated (Miamisburg, Ohio), is developing a new fatty-acid methyl esters (FAME) biodiesel production unit. It will be co-located at Calgren's ethanol facility in central California.

SJV Biodiesel LLC was formed in July 2016. Soon after, it was selected by the California Energy Commission Grant Solicitation and Application Package to develop "Community-Scale and Commercial-Scale Advanced Biofuels Production Facilities."

The joint venture received $3.6 million in grant money to develop a biodiesel plant that would be integrated into an existing ethanol plant.

The estimated $9 million project will utilize non-inedible corn oil from Calgren's 57 million-gallon-per-year fuel-ethanol production facility to produce a projected 5 million gallons per year of second-generation biofuels.

The new unit will utilize Jatro's SUPER Single-Stage Process Technology to produce biodiesel from FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) feedstocks. The biodiesel is produced through the supercritical-method SUPER process, which manufactures the biofuel in five steps as opposed to the traditional method that takes eight to 10 steps.

The unit currently sits at 50% completion, with its production equipment on order. A new, 3,000-square-foot production building and a small, 80-square-foot control building will house the new unit, along with a new steel product storage tank.

The state-of-the-art production unit will be thermally integrated into the ethanol plant, resulting in reduced energy consumption and a smaller carbon footprint.

With the winter weather climate in Tulare County averaging from 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, construction will continue over the next six months. The new unit is scheduled to be in full production by February or March 2018.
