Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--According to a filing released earlier this week, the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has begun preparing the environmental impact statements (EIS) for two natural gas pipelines in the southeastern U.S. adding up to nearly 500 miles in combined length and bringing 3.4 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of new natural gas transmission capacity.

One of the pipeline projects entering the review is Kinder Morgan subsidiary Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company LLC's (TGP) (Houston, Texas) Mississippi Crossing (MSX) project, which will run from near Greenville, Mississippi, connecting to TGP's existing system and third-party pipelines for delivery near Butler, Alabama. The MSX project will include 199 miles of 36-inch and 42-inch-diameter pipeline and 9 miles of 36-inch laterals. In addition to the line, TGP will construct new compressor stations and upgrade an existing one. The MSX project will add 2.1 Bcf/d of new takeaway capacity.

FERC staff said the initial draft EIS for MSX will analyze the pipeline's impact on water resources, wetlands, endangered species and more, noting that MSX would affect 146 acres of wetlands and cross more than 1,000 bodies of water. The second project entering FERC's review process comes from two other Kinder Morgan subsidiaries: Southern Natural Gas Company LLC (Homewood, Alabama) and Elba Express Company LLC. The companies' South System Expansion 4 (SSE4) includes the addition of 291 miles of looping pipelines along the existing South Main Line in Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. More than 10 compressor stations will be upgraded to support the new volumes, primarily through replacing the older compressors with higher-efficiency units. The pipeline expansion is expected to add more than 1.3 Bcf/d of new transmission capacity. FERC noted that the pipeline would affect 224 acres of wetlands and cross three significant rivers.

The Kinder Morgan subsidiaries submitted their applications for both projects to FERC on June 30, and the agency expects to issue the draft EIS in January 2026, with the final version expected by June and decisions on the pipelines' construction coming in September 2026.
