According to a recent report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, U.S. natural gas production hit a record high in 2018. Natural gas production averaged 101.3 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d), which is an increase of 10 Bcf/d from 2017. Production levels last year were 11% higher than in 2017, which is the largest annual increase recorded.

The Appalachian region was the top natural gas production region, where producers in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio produced a combined 28.5 Bcf/d, representing more than one-quarter of U.S. output. Pennsylvania was the second-largest producing state, behind Texas.
