Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Late last week, the U.S. Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council approved the construction of Orsted A/S (Fredericia, Denmark) and Eversource Energy's (NYSE:ES) (Hartford, Connecticut) Revolution wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island. The decision marks the final approval needed from the federal government to commence construction and came just after another offshore project by Orsted and Eversource delivered power to the New York grid for the first time.

The Revolution Windfarm will supply power to Connecticut and Rhode Island. Both states have emissions-reduction goals in place. Connecticut's were set in the state's 2008 Global Warming Solutions Act, which calls for a 10% reduction below 1990 levels by 2020, 45% below 2001 levels by 2030 and an 80% reduction in emissions by 2050. Earlier this year, the state reported it had achieved its goal in 2020, with a 13.9% reduction in emissions, but many experts say it has fallen behind in meeting the 2030 goal of a 45% emissions reduction. Rhode Island's 2021 Act on Climate mandates that emissions are 45% below 1990 levels by 2030, 80% less by 2040 and net zero by 2050.

The windfarm will feature 88 turbines, each rated at 8 megawatts (MW), to achieve its nameplate generation of 704 MW, enough energy to power more than 250,000 homes in the region, according to the developers. Connecticut will obtain 300 MW from the project, while Rhode Island will receive the remaining 404 MW. If construction begins soon, the facility could be on track for completion in late 2025 or early 2026. But Revolution's final nod wasn't the only news Orsted and Eversource were celebrating last week. On Wednesday, the developers reported that their South Fork offshore windfarm off eastern Long Island had delivered its first power to the New York grid. The first turbine for the South Fork facility was installed in late November. The windfarm is on the smaller side compared to other planned U.S. offshore wind developments, coming in at about 130 MW of nameplate generation via 12 turbines. With some turbines in place, the rest are expected to be installed in the remainder of this year and early next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's can click here for more information.

Other U.S. offshore wind news last week came from Massachusetts, where the first five turbines in the Vineyard 1 offshore wind installation are in place and expected to begin delivering power by the end of the year. The Vineyard 1 project is being developed by Avangrid Incorporated (NYSE:AGR) (Orange, Connecticut) and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (Copenhagen, Denmark). Vineyard 1's first turbine was put in place in late October at a location about 15 miles off the coast of Martha's Vineyard.

The Vineyard 1 offshore windfarm eventually will boast 62 General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) Haliade-X turbines and have a total generation capacity of 806 MW, enough to power 400,000 Massachusetts homes and businesses, according to developers. Avangrid said the windfarm will provide enough power for about 30,000 homes by the end of this year. Subscribers can click here for related reports.
