Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The major change in the World Steel Association's 2012 global rankings of steel-producing companies is that Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) has taken second place on the list, with 47.9 million tons for the year, behind ArcelorMittal (NYSE:MT) (Luxembourg), which has 93.6 million tons.
The elevation of the newly merged company has moved the previous year's second-to-fourth companies down a notch, with POSCO (NYSE:PKX) (Seoul, South Korea) coming in at No. 5 with 39.9 million tons. Hebei Group (Shijiazhuang, China) is No. 3 with 42.8 million tons, and Baosteel (SSE:600019) (Shanghai, China) is No. 4 with 42.7 million tons.
U.S. Steel Corporation (NYSE:X) was at No. 12 with 21.4 million tons in annual production, and Nucor was No. 13 with 20.1 million tons. Chinese companies featured prominently throughout the top 40 rankings.
China dominated the steel-producing countries list with 716.5 million tons, followed by Japan at 107.2 million tons. The U.S. came in third with 88.7 million tons, followed by India's 77.6 million tons and Russia's 70.4 million tons.
