Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Ireland is renowned for its spectacular natural beauty and is a top vacation destination. But not only tourists are drawn like a magnet to the Emerald Isle, which has long reigned as a favored location for all facets of the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry.

Drug manufacturers and medical device manufacturers appreciate the extremely educated available workforce and a pro-business government. The roster of companies with manufacturing and research facilities located in Ireland include virtually all of the majors and those that want to be.

There are currently 101 active reported projects in various stages of development (planning to construction), representing a total investment value of slightly more than $3 billion. Of those, nearly $900 million (62 projects), have a future kickoff date.

The projects include everything from a $900 million advanced biological manufacturing plant to regularly scheduled maintenance programs to keep the delicate and expensive equipment running optimally.

Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMS) (New York, New York) shopped the nearly $1 billion project around globally before finally settling on a hundred-acre site adjacent to its existing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) plant. The company is building a 300,000-square-foot, large-scale biological production facility, including six 15,000-liter bioreactors (90,000-liter total capacity) and purification area, which will manufacture multiple therapies from the company's growing biologics portfolio.

Project team members include Jacobs Incorporated (Dublin, Ireland), Duggan Brothers Contractors Limited (Templemore, Ireland) and PLJ Management Services Limited (Dublin). The BMS Dublin project is expected to be complete in 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Shire plc (NASDAQ:SHPG) (Dublin) chose the city of Dunboyne for a $400 million investment to build a grassroot biologicals manufacturing plant. The decision to invest in the new facility was based on increased product demand, for both existing biological products and those still in the pipeline. The plant will be capable of both clinical and commercial-scale production. An estimated 400 new jobs are expected to be created at the new facility. Jacobs is on board for this project, as well as P.J. Hegarty & Sons and EIS Limited (Dublin). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Eli Lilly & Company (NYSE:LLY) (Indianapolis, Indiana) recently revved up plans to invest $100 million to expand biopharmaceutical API production in Kinsale. The project will add a three-story, 25,196 square-meter production building adjacent to the existing IE43 facility. Team members have been identified and are included on Industrial Info's project report.
