Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--M.A. Mortenson Construction (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is making good on its reputation as a top engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, with more than $7 billion in active projects crisscrossing the continental U.S. About $5.5 billion worth already are under construction, but the list isn't limited to renewable-energy projects, which have been the company's bread and butter; it includes pharmaceutical and technological manufacturing facilities.
Earlier this month, MidAmerican Energy Company (Des Moines, Iowa) selected Mortenson as the EPC company for the $300 million Beaver Creek Windfarm in Boone, Iowa. The 170-megawatt (MW) facility--which will comprise 85 turbines from Vestas (Aarhus, Denmark), each with a capacity of 2 MW--is Mortenson's 13th project for MidAmerican. In addition to its windfarm projects, Mortenson has more than $1.5 billion worth of projects in the Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry, including two under or nearing construction: Kansas State University's $1.25 billion, second-phase research and development center in Manhattan, Kansas, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) (Washington, D.C.) $160 million in upfits and modernizations at its Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory in Atlanta, Georgia. The KSU project, which is being handled as part of a joint venture with McCarthy Building Companies Incorporated (Houston), will replace the aging Plum Island Animal Disease Center in New York.
