Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri) is adding to an already-impressive slate of projects in Texas and Louisiana. Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana) recently hired the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for a gas-fired power plant, and numerous power-generation and refining projects are underway along the Gulf Coast. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $3.8 billion in active projects involving Burns & McDonnell in Texas and Louisiana, about $1.3 billion of which are nearing or under construction.
Entergy's $210 million Reciprocating Unit Addition at the Michoud Peaking Station in New Orleans, Louisiana, will begin construction this summer. The 128-megawatt (MW) facility will feature seven Wärtsilä reciprocating engines. Burns & McDonnell noted in a press release that the Michoud power plant had been retired "due to economic and operational considerations," but the new unit is expected to be commissioned and fully operational by January 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Burns & McDonnell already is working on another power-generation project that is set to wrap up this summer: Denton Municipal Utilities' $265 million energy center in Denton, Texas, which will generate 225 MW from 12 Wartsila engines. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Another recent addition to Burns & McDonnell's Louisiana schedule is Valero Energy Corporation's (NYSE:VLO) (San Antonio, Texas) $400 million alkylation unit addition at the St. Charles Refinery in Norco, Louisiana. The unit, which is slated to become operational in mid-2020, will produce 25,000 BBL/d of alkylate from fluid catalytic cracker-derived olefin feedstocks, to increase octane blending in the facility's gasoline pool. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
One Valero executive recently noted that the new project is a boost for the St. Charles Refinery, which faces greater logistical challenges than the company's Texas facilities. "St. Charles has a lot of capability to process Canadian barrels, but we don't have a good way to get it there," said Gary Simmons, the Senior Vice President for Supply, International Operations and Systems Optimization for Valero, in a quarterly earnings-related conference call. "And so, we are starting some barge operations from our Hartford terminal where we'll barge some heavy Canadian into St. Charles which will start in February."
In Texas, Burns & McDonnell is at work on another Valero project: a $300 million alkylation unit addition at a refinery in Houston, Texas, which is expected to convert butanes and pentenes into 13,000 BBL/d of alkylates for a higher-value gasoline blendstock. The projects is set to wrap up in first-quarter 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Valero and Magellan Midstream Partners LP (NYSE:MMP) (Tulsa, Oklahoma) formed a joint venture for one such terminal project in Texas. Burns & McDonnell is set to perform engineering services for the $335 million refined petroleum products and ethanol marine terminal in Pasadena, Texas, which involves building a marine dock at least 10 tanks to store petroleum products and gasoline or diesel fuel. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Other refining projects involving Burns & McDonnell that are set to begin construction within the year include Phillips 66's (NYSE:PSX) (Houston, Texas) $250 million addition of an isomerization unit at its Lake Charles Refinery in Westlake, Louisiana. The project, is expected to kick off this spring and to be completed in late 2019, will 25,000 BBL/d of high-octane gasoline blendstock.
In Texas, the EPC contractor is at work on two projects for WRB Refining (Borger, Texas): a $20 million diesel hydrotreater upgrade and a $15 million gas oil hydrotreater upgrade at a refinery in Borger. WRB is enhancing the units, which have capacities of 20,000 BBL/d and 73,000 BBL/d, respectively, so they can produce additional diesel fuels. For more information, see Industrial Info' reports on the Lake Charles, Borger diesel and Borger gas-oil projects.
