Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking nearly 57,000 confirmed capital projects worth more than $4.1 trillion across the globe that are planned to start construction in 2020.
With roughly $2.3 trillion worth of projects that have planned construction starts this year, Asia dwarfs all other world regions, followed by North America, with nearly $709 billion, and Europe, with $396 billion. Not all of the projects across the 12 industry groups covered by Industrial Info will kick off as planned, due to a variety of reasons.

In Asia, one of the big-ticket items planned for kickoff this year is the $9.2 billion Jaitapur Nuclear Power Station, located in Raigad, in the state of Maharashtra, India. The project by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (Mumbai, India) would ultimately generate 9.9 gigawatts. Phase 1 of the project includes the construction of containment buildings for units 1 and 2, and installation of two 1,650-megawatt (MW) pressurized water reactors. Nuclear Power Corporation of India is working on the project with a consortium of Electricite de France S.A. (Paris, France) and GE Power, part of General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts). If all phases are completed, the Jaitapur station would be the world's largest nuclear power generating station. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In North America, PEMEX TRI's (Petroleos Mexicanos) (Mexico City, Mexico) $8.1 billion Dos Bocas Refinery in Tabasco, Mexico, is assessed as having a high probability (81-99%) of moving forward as planned. A component in President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's drive for fuel self-reliance, the 340,000 barrel-per-day (BBL/d) grassroot refinery would produce 170,000 BBL/d of gasoline and 120,000 BBL/d of diesel. Completion is planned for the end of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Another big-ticket item in North America with a high probability of moving forward this year is the City of Calgary's $4.9 billion Green Line light rail transit system in Alberta, Canada. Hatch Limited (Calgary) is providing the preliminary engineering for the 20-kilometer rail line to run between north-central and southeastern Calgary. Completion is planned by the end of 2026. However, plans for the final alignment of the rail line have been delayed due to cost issues, according to local news media reports. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In the U.S., a $1.7 billion, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) unit addition at Covestro AG's (Leverkusen, Germany) Baytown Industrial Chemicals site in Texas is planned for construction kickoff in mid-2020, with completion in fourth-quarter 2024. The unit would produce about 500,000 tons per year of MDI. KBR Incorporated (NYSE:KBR) (Houston) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Europe's highest-dollar, high-probability project set for kickoff this year involves the $7.8 billion decommissioning and dismantlement of the Sellafield (Calder Hall) Nuclear Power Station in the U.K. Touted as the world's first commercial nuclear power station, Calder Hall ceased operations in 2003 after generating electricity for 47 years. It has four basic gas-cooled (Magnox) reactors. Completion of the decommissioning and dismantlement is planned for mid-2039. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The Power Industry stands head and shoulders above the other industries tracked by Industrial Info, with more than $1.4 trillion worth of projects planned for kickoff this year.

In the East China Sea offshore Yuhuan, China, China Huadian Corporation (Jinan, China), plans to build the 300-MW Taizhou Yuhuan #1 Offshore Windfarm at a cost of nearly $7.3 billion. The windfarm will have 75 tubular towers, each fitted with a 4-MW wind turbine generator. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Industrial Manufacturing comes in next, with more than $600 billion in project activity that is planned to start construction across the globe this year. A 30,000-unit-per-month active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) manufacturing plant with a $5.7 billion price tag in China is planned for construction in Xian, Shaanxi province. The project by Shanxi Incoflex Semiconductor Technology Limited (Xian) includes construction of dust-free workshops covering 550,000 square meters, including warehouses and office buildings, production lines and supporting facilities. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The Metals & Minerals Industry follows, with nearly $590 billion worth of planned kickoffs. In Compostela Valley (province of Davao de Oro), St. Augustine Gold & Copper Limited (Singapore) plans to start construction on the $2 billion Pantukan King-King copper-gold mine and processing facility. Plans call for a 100,000-ton-per-day, open-pit copper-gold ore mine with two processing plants, a 60,000-ton-per-day flotation concentrator and an initial 40,000-ton-per-day heap-leaching operation. Completion is planned for the third quarter of 2023. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
