Belgium's offshore wind-power developers enjoyed a record-breaking year in 2019. Despite the country's narrow stretch of coast on the North Sea, offshore wind last year met 6% of Belgium's power needs, one of the highest shares in the world next to Denmark and United Kingdom.
According to Belgian transmission system operator Elia, this was the first year since 2010 that Belgium exported more electricity than it imported. The increase in production was attributed, in part, to the commissioning of the 370-megawatt (MW) Norther Offshore Windfarm. Two other offshore windfarms--the 219-MW Northwester II and 487-MW Seamade complex--are slated to connect with the grid in 2020, bringing Belgium's installed capacity from 1.56 to 2.26 gigawatts.
Industrial Info is tracking more than $6.8 billion worth of wind-power projects, onshore and offshore, in Belgium. Click here for a list, and see map below for offshore projects.
