Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Guatemala's mountainous terrain hinders the development of its road network, but the Central American nation is betting on public transportation and alternative modes to solve its traffic problem. An ambitious transportation plan first developed in the 1990s finally is making progress, partly due to new modalities and technologies.
Under the plan, 85% of Guatemala's residents will live no more than 500 meters from a public transport station by 2030. Eddy Morataya, director of mobility for the Municipality of Guatemala, says five projects are being developed to change the way Guatemalans move around.
One project is the Aerometro, an aerial tram system with an estimated investment of $180 million. The project recently was awarded to a company comprising four commercial entities, which will have control of the aerial tram transportation system for a maximum term of 25 years. The company is designing the project, and construction is estimated to begin early next year.
Another project, the Metro Riel, will cross the city via old train lines from north to south. The Metro Riel would have a capacity for 25,000 users and 20 stations along its route, connecting Transmetro, Aerometro, bicycle lanes and bus stations. The implementation of this transportation system requires several complementary works, including the $772 million construction of two multimodal bridges.
Industrial Info is tracking more than 50 transportation projects across Central America, with a total investment value of more than $17.3 billion.
