Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The very name "Nevada" conjures up images of deserts and blazing sun, so it's perhaps no surprise that solar power projects take a prominent position in the nearly $4.4 billion worth of industrial projects under construction in the state. Other substantial categories for project activity include the Alternative Fuels and Industrial Manufacturing industries.

Among the solar power projects underway in the state is NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) Dodge Flats solar project near Wadsworth, Nevada, about 30 miles east of Reno. The facility will use 10,400 thin-film solar modules to generate 200 megawatts (MW). Construction kicked off about a year ago and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for the project report. The facility will be accompanied by a 50-MW battery energy storage system. Click here for the project report.

NextEra also is underway with the Fish Springs solar project near Reno, which will use 5,200 solar panels to generate 100 MW. Construction started earlier this year and is expected to be finished by yearend. McCarthy Building Companies Incorporated (Saint Louis, Missouri) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services on both the Fish Springs and Dodge Flats projects. Among Nevada's prominent alternative fuels projects is the restart and expansion of a renewable diesel plant in McCarran. Encore DEC LLC (Reno) acquired the plant from Ryze Renewables (Sparks, Nevada) a few years ago. The project entails installing a trickle-down reactor column and new equipment to process corn oil and other feedstocks into 50 million gallons per year of renewable diesel. The project kicked off in early 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2022. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Alternative Fuels project database can click here for the project report.

Switch (Las Vegas, Nevada) has become one of the major constructors of data centers in the U.S. and is underway with several projects in its home state of Nevada, including an expansion of its facility in Las Vegas. Construction of Building 14 at the data center campus kicked off late last year and includes the construction of a 340,000-square-foot building that is wrapping up soon. Construction on Building 15 started earlier this year and includes another 340,000-square-foot building.

Switch plans on eventually expanding the campus to 4.6 million square feet, with 545 MW of power. The facility will be part of a planned a fiber optic network "superloop" that will connect Reno and Las Vegas in Nevada with Los Angeles and San Francisco in California, dramatically increasing the speed information can travel among the cities. While electric vehicles recently have been garnering the most headlines in regard to zero-emission vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell technology is another means of obtaining emissions-free transit, with California a leading proponent of the technology. Air Liquide SA is getting in on the action with the construction of a grassroot liquid hydrogen plant in Las Vegas that will ship product to retail liquid hydrogen fueling stations in Nevada and California. The plant will produce 29.8 tons per day of the fuel. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Seemingly no U.S. state is exempt from having at least one project from e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN), and Amazon is underway with a renovation of its AMXL fulfillment center in Reno, which specializes in large items from televisions to couches. The project kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed by yearend. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
