Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Government funding has been granted to the U.K.'s largest green hydrogen project to be located at the Whitelee onshore windfarm in Scotland.

The 20-megawatt (MW) project, once complete, would be capable of providing enough zero-emission hydrogen to power up to 550 hydrogen buses to travel from Glasgow to Edinburgh and back again each day, said lead developer and windfarm operator ScottishPower. The company will work with hydrogen and energy storage firm ITM Power and industrial gas provider BOC. It will be located next to the 539-MW Whitelee windfarm on Eaglesham Moor, near Glasgow. Green hydrogen uses renewable energy to power an electrolyser, which splits water into its two core elements; hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen can be easily stored for transport.

The government has agreed to provide £9.4 million (US$12.6 million) of funding from its Storage at Scale competition. It will see a proton exchange membrane electrolyser (PEM) developed by ITM installed onsite, powered by renewable energy, while BOC will manage the engineering and operations. Surplus renewable energy from the windfarm will be used and backed up by the construction of a combined solar--up to 40 MW--and battery energy storage scheme--up to 50 MW--to keep it up and running. The project aims to supply hydrogen to the commercial market before 2023. It will be capable of producing 8 to10 tonnes of green hydrogen per day.

Greg Hands, U.K. minister of state for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, commented: "Innovative green technologies like this pioneering hydrogen project here in Whitelee will drive forward the U.K.'s green industrial revolution and support us as we shift to a clean energy future. Supported by £9.4 million in U.K. government funding, it will bring green economic growth to Glasgow, and put Scotland at the heart of plans to create a thriving low carbon hydrogen sector in the U.K.."

Barry Carruthers, ScottishPower's hydrogen director, said: "Green hydrogen production at Whitelee is our flagship project, demonstrating how clean, zero-emission hydrogen can be produced and used at a commercial scale. Glasgow has ambitions to be the first city in the U.K. to achieve Net Zero by 2030 and green hydrogen being available by 2023 to support heavy industries and fleets to decarbonise in and around the city will be critical to this goal being achieved."

Earlier this year, Industrial Info reported on the launch of the U.K.'s first Hydrogen Strategy roadmap, with the goal of creating a thriving hydrogen economy that will attract at least £4 billion (US$5.5 billion) in investment by the end of the decade. Working with industry, it wants to hit 5 gigawatts (GW) of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030--the equivalent of replacing natural gas in powering about 3 million U.K. homes each year as well as powering transport and businesses, particularly heavy industry. For additional information, see August 23, 2021, article--U.K.'s Hydrogen Strategy to Raise $5.5 Billion in Project Investment.

Industrial Info is tracking all of the key hydrogen projects in the U.K.. These cover "green hydrogen" projects that extract hydrogen from water using electrolysers powered by renewable energy, leaving only oxygen as a byproduct, and "blue hydrogen" schemes, which extract hydrogen from fossil fuel gas and then capture most of the emissions with a variety of carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions.
