Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--North America's Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry opened 152 new plants in 2021. Comprising brownfield and grassroot facilities, the sites represent a potential total investment value of $8 billion, when including original construction costs with any planned expansions or additional phases. Interestingly, none of the plants were sourced from traditional "big pharma" companies.
While the vast majority of the new sites are on the West Coast, the Northeast is not far behind. In fact, nearly every U.S. region saw new plants open. The facilities will house everything from drug development research labs to the manufacture of advanced cell and gene therapeutics. From a manufacturing standpoint, biological production investment led the sectors in spending, with 34 new plants. This is in no small part due to the demand for vaccine production; but, as mentioned, gene and cell therapy (CGT) production continues to grow across the country.
