                    Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China produced 4.07 billion metric tons of coal in 2021, a 4.7% increase over production in 2020, and 5.6% more than in 2019, China's National Bureau of Statistics reported earlier this month.
For the month of December, coal output reached 380 million metric tons, an increase of 7.2% year over year, or 10.7% more than in December 2019, the bureau reported.

China also imported 320 million metric tons of coal last year, a 6.6% increase over imports in 2020. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) latest Short Term Energy Outlook (STEO), between January and October 2021, China imported almost 11 million short tons of U.S. coal, more than in the previous four years combined, as U.S. producers took advantage of a trade dispute between China and Australia. Metallurgical coal represented about 90% of China's imports of U.S. coal in 2021.
For the month of December, China imported 30.95 million metric tons of coal, a 20.8% drop from imports in December 2020.
