Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Commonly thought of as a weed, the humble dandelion may become a source of rubber used in tires for the military. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NASDAQ:GT) (Akron, Ohio) will study the use of dandelions in the U.S. to produce rubber for tires.
Goodyear said it is collaborating with the U.S. military as part of a multimillion-dollar program that is aimed in part at finding domestic sources of natural rubber, which has been classified as a strategic raw material used in the manufacture of military, aircraft and truck tires. Currently, the vast majority of the world's natural rubber comes from outside the U.S.
The multi-year program involves the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) and The Bioindustrial Manufacturing and Design Ecosystem (BioMADE)--an institute studying biomanufacturing, which was established in late 2020 with a combination of funding from the DoD and almost 100 entities across 31 states--companies; universities; six non-profits; and two venture-capital groups.
Goodyear will work with Farmed Materials (Cincinnati, Ohio) to develop domestically-sourced natural rubber from the TK species of dandelion. TK seeds are being planted and harvested this spring, according to a press release.
The natural rubber produced via the program will be used to produce military aircraft tires, which will be manufactured and tested by Goodyear in cooperation with the AFRL at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
Biomanufacturing involves using living organisms to make industrial products such as renewable fuels and chemicals, and other materials such as natural rubber.
More than 99% of the world's natural rubber is made from latex derived from rubber trees, which are primarily sourced from Southeast Asia, according to the Goodyear website.
"This is a critical time to develop a domestic source of natural rubber, which may help mitigate future supply-chain challenges," said Chris Helsel, senior vice president of global operations and chief technology officer for Goodyear.
Industrial Info is tracking more than $2 billion worth of tire manufacturing-related capital projects in North America. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for a full list of detailed project reports.
Goodyear began construction on a $15 million equipment addition at its passenger and radial light truck tires plant in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in March. The project involves installing new machinery plus production equipment to increase manufacturing capacity. Completion is expected in November.
The tire giant's equipment modernization project at its tire manufacturing plant in Lawton, Oklahoma, is expected to kick off in July. The work entails constructing a building addition to install an advanced mixer, and to meet performance requirements for electric and self-driving vehicles. Subscribers can see Industrial Info's detailed reports on the Fayetteville and Lawton projects.
The highest-valued project belongs to Hankook Tire America Corporation, a subsidiary of Hankook Tire and Technology Company (South Korea). The $361 million Phase II construction of a high-end performance tire plant in Clarksville, Tennessee, is planned to kick off in June. The 750,000-square-foot plant is currently producing 5.5 million tires annually, and a new 750,000-square foot addition will double the annual production capacity. Subscribers can click here for the detailed project report.
In Mexico, a subsidiary of Bridgestone Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) is at work on a $100 million expansion at its passenger and light truck tire plant in Cuernavaca. The project will add an additional building to increase the production capacity 15%, from 7 million units per year to 8 million per year, in order to supply electric-vehicle assembly plants. Completion is expected later this month. Subscribers can click here for more information.
