Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. could surpass Australia and Qatar as the world's top liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), once Venture Global LNG's (Arlington, Virginia) Calcasieu Pass LNG export facility in Louisiana is placed into full service by the end of 2022.
U.S. LNG exports this year are expected to average 12.2 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d), up from a then-record 9.7 Bcf/d in 2021, according to the EIA.

The first-phase liquefaction terminal at the Calcasieu Pass facility--which will produce more than 10 million metric tons per year of LNG for export when fully in service--began first production in mid-January, according to the company. The first commissioned cargo departed on March 1 on a tanker chartered by JERA Global Markets, a subsidiary of JERA (Tokyo, Japan)--one of the world's largest buyers of LNG and Japan's biggest power generator, according to the company. A second-phase expansion project, to add another 5 million tons per year of production capacity, is underway; completion is expected in early 2023. Subscribers can click here for the project report. The LNG would be transported via the 24-mile, 42-inch-diameter TransCameron Pipeline, which will interconnect with three existing pipelines: TC Energy's (NYSE:TRP) (Calgary, Alberta) ANR Pipeline; Enbridge Incorporated's (NYSE:ENB) (Calgary) Texas Eastern (TETCO) Pipeline; and the Louisiana intrastate Bridgeline Pipeline, owned by EnLink Midstream LLC (NYSE:ENLC) (Dallas, Texas).

Venture Global also plans to invest more than $10 billion to construct the CP2 LNG production and export terminal, adjacent to Calcasieu Pass. When complete, the facility would produce about 18 million to 20 million metric tons per year for export. Construction on the first phase is expected to begin in 2023.
