Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Medical device major Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE:BSX) is to spend 100 million euro (US$108 million) in expanding its leading Irish manufacturing operation in Galway.

The company will build a 40,000-square-foot addition to its medical device manufacturing campus in Ballybrit, which will be powered by renewable energy. Boston, which already employs more than 3,700 people in the city, said that the new facility will add more than 300 jobs when it is commissioned. The plant makes a wide range of medical devices including heart stents and valves, vascular balloons and esophageal stents. It exports more than 4 million products from Galway each year. The expanded site will include a carbon-neutral manufacturing space, which Boston said was "in alignment with the company's goal to achieve carbon neutrality in all manufacturing and key distribution sites by 2030".

Ireland's Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, welcomed the news: "This is a welcome investment in the medical technology industry in Galway and the entire region, and it reflects real confidence in the quality and talent of the Irish workforce. Ireland has established itself as a global leader in the sector, with exciting opportunities to produce innovations that improve patient health and quality of life."

"Boston Scientific has a workforce of more than 6,500 people across its sites in Galway, Clonmel and Cork, making it the largest life sciences employer in Ireland," added Martin Shanahan, chief executive officer of state business agency, IDA Ireland. "Today, Ireland has the highest per capita number of people employed in the European medical device industry. Boston Scientific is one of the leading global MedTech companies choosing to grow in Ireland and contribute to a vibrant industry sector, which has a key role to play in tackling the world's biggest healthcare challenges."

Last year, Boston announced a 30 million-euro (US$32.3 million) investment in its facilities in County Cork. The research, development and innovation (RD&I) investment, supported by IDA Ireland, is designed to accelerate the development and manufacturing of minimally-invasive medical technologies for patients suffering from cancer and peripheral arterial diseases. Another 70 engineering and production jobs will be added to the existing 1,200-strong workforce.
