Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Perth, Australia)--Early site construction on the 102-megawatt (MW) Nyngan Solar Project will begin in the last week of January, according to a spokesperson for AGL Energy Limited (Sydney, New South Wales). The Nyngan Photovoltaic Plant will be located in central New South Wales and is to be developed by AGL. The project received financial closure following funding agreements with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency in July 2013.

In 2012, AGL signed up First Solar Australia Pty Limited (Sydney), a subsidiary of First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona), as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. The selection of First Solar concluded a comprehensive selection process that included several qualified groups.

First Solar subsequently selected Consolidated Power Projects Australia Pty Limited (Adelaide, South Australia) as a subcontractor, while Sinclair Knight Merz Limited (Sydney) is providing consultation services for the project.

Most recently in November 2013, First Solar finalized IXL Group (Victoria, Australia) to provide structural framing equipment for the project.

The Nyngan solar farm will be built on a 250-hectare site and will involve the installation of more than 1.35 million of First Solar's advanced cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin film photovoltaic modules. Early site work will commence on or by January 28, 2014. Major construction will begin around mid-2014, and the solar farm is expected to come online by end of 2015.

The project will involve construction of a 132-kilovolt (kV) overhead transmission line to connect the solar plant with the existing, 132-kV Nyngan-Cobar line. The transmission line easement will be over a length of 3 kilometers.

First Solar will maintain the plant for five years after commercial operations begin. According to AGL, the $300 million Nyngan project will bring huge benefits to the local community by generating approximately 300 direct jobs over the construction period.
