Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--New Jersey, the U.S.' fifth-smallest state by land area, may be relatively diminutive, but it is an industrial powerhouse. Industrial Info is tracking more than $8 billion in projects under construction in the state. The Industrial Manufacturing Industry leads in terms of overall project spending, thanks in a large part to a redevelopment project at one of the nation's busiest airports.

Coming in with a total investment value of more than $2.5 billion is the Terminal A redevelopment project at the Newark Liberty International Airport. The project entails construction of a 1 million-square-foot building, including 33 airport terminal gates, and a 3,000-space parking garage. The project, which kicked off in 2018, will help ease passenger congestion at the airport--one of three serving the New York metropolitan area. According to the airport website, the redevelopment is the largest design-build project in New Jersey's history. It is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Although the Biden administration is touting nuclear energy as an important means to provide carbon-free power generation, many older, smaller plants in the U.S. are having trouble competing with lower-cost forms of energy and are being decommissioned. Among these is New Jersey's 615-megawatt Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Station. The plant was closed in 2018 under the ownership of Exelon Corporation (NASDAQ:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois), and the decommissioning process started the following year. According to an article from World Nuclear News (WNN), all fissile material in the plant's reactor building has been transferred to an on-site independent fuel storage installation, which allowed for the protected area to be reduced from 150 acres to six acres. The process is expected to be wrapped up in 2035, although according to WNN, some of the structures originally scheduled for demolition in 2024 and 2025 already have been dismantled. The U.S. Northeast has a strong concentration of Pharmaceutical-Biotech projects, and New Jersey is making a good showing, with more than $800 million of them underway. Among these is Merck & Co. Incorporated's (NYSE:MRK) (Kenilworth, New Jersey) 120,000-square-foot building addition for the research and development of pharmaceuticals for several products, including those for oncology, hepatitis C, diabetes and Alzheimer's Disease. Construction kicked off in early 2019 and is expected to wrap up next summer. Another form of power generation being touted by the Biden administration is offshore wind power. While some big projects are being planned (notably Dominion Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) 2.6-gigawatt undertaking offshore Virginia (see project report)), this sector is still in its infancy in the U.S. But EEW Group (Erndtebruck, Germany) is gearing up for it to take hold with the construction of a brownfield monopiles manufacturing plant for use in the offshore wind sector. The facility is being built on the site of a former oil tank farm. Construction kicked off this summer and is expected to be completed in late 2023. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
Alternative food products made from plant-based sources are changing the U.S. Food & Beverage Industry, and in New Jersey, Innovation Foods HQ (Bridgeton, New Jersey) is riding the wave of this new popularity with the construction of a grassroot oat milk processing plant in Millville. The project entails expansion of a wastewater treatment plant and construction of a 71,866-square-foot plant. Construction kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed next summer.
