Written by Daniel Graeber for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While provincial leaders make their case for steady trade with U.S. partners, fire advisories are in place for parts of oil-rich Alberta as hot dry weather continues to increase the risk of wildfires.
It's been a mild wildfire season by historical standards in Alberta, though nearly the entire province is in a severe drought due to the warm, dry weather over much of the summer months. Fire advisories are in place for Calgary and into the oil-rich area of Fort McMurray.
No rain is in sight for the coming week, though temperatures are within seasonal range. Less than a million hectares (247 million acres) have been torched so far this year. The 2023 wildfire season was the most destructive on record, with more than 16.5 million hectares--or some 64,000 square miles--lost.
Fires last year torched the resort town of Jasper and the surrounding Jasper National Park in Alberta. Suncor Energy Incorporated (Calgary, Alberta) was the only company to experience an actual production issue last year, however, briefly closing down its 215,000 barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Firebag oil sands operation.

Meanwhile, provincial leaders from Alberta are making their case for trade opportunities with their U.S. partners amid declining bilateral ties sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump's aggressive trade policies.
Leaders traveled Monday to Anchorage, Alaska, ahead of a four-day energy conference. Competition is ramping up on the western shores of North America as both countries race to build up the liquified natural gas (LNG) sector in the region.
Last week, Prime Minister Mark Carney included the second phase of the LNG Canada facility in British Columbia in a list of national-priority projects. Already delivering cargo to energy-hungry customers in Asia, LNG Canada has expansion plans in place that would transform the complex into one of the largest LNG facilities in the world.
The British Columbia plant currently can produce up to 14 million metric tons annually (MTPA) of LNG through two production trains, and the expansion plans call for this to be doubled to 28 MTPA through the addition of two more liquefaction units.

Last week, meanwhile, Glenfarne Alaska secured the steel commitments necessary for a pipeline slated for the Alaska LNG facility. Though it's already sanctioned for exports, the facility is not yet under construction.

Elsewhere, Tany Yao, a member of the legislative assembly from the Fort-McMurray region, planned to head to Wyoming later this week for the Council of State Governments-West meeting of industry leaders and U.S. state delegates.
"For decades, our economy has been closely tied with the U.S., and western states in particular," he said. "These connections are worth protecting."
The U.S. is Alberta's largest trading partner, though that may be in jeopardy given Trump's trade policies. Exports from Alberta were valued at around $115 billion last year. Because of the make-up of the U.S. refining sector, Canada as a whole accounts for about 60% of the foreign oil delivered to the U.S. market.
