Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $35.6 billion worth of capital data center projects that are planned to begin or have already begun construction this year in the U.S. At the top of the ranks by overall project value are the usual suspects: Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington), Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) and e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), but the clear winner is Google parent Alphabet Incorporated (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (Mountain View, California), which plans to break ground on more than $6 billion worth of data center projects in the U.S. this year.
Much of Alphabet's planned work is in the U.S. Midwest and Rocky Mountains market regions, each of which has which has $2 billion or more worth of projects planned for 2023. In the Midwest, a large part of the company's activity is focused on its development in Kansas City, Missouri, known as "Project Shale." Phase I is set to kick off this summer and entails constructing a data center building of up to 1 million square feet to help meet regional demand for Google services. Phase I is expected to be completed early next year. Before the first phase of construction ends, a second phase could begin by the end of this year, which would include a second building. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for the report on Phase I and here for the Phase II report.
In the Rockies, Alphabet's largest planned project is a grassroot data center in Eagle Mountain, Utah, on the southern outskirts of Salt Lake City. Construction is set to kick off in the coming months and be completed by the end of 2024. Eagle Mountain has attracted another big player, Meta Platforms, which is underway with a Phase II expansion of its facility in the city. The project entails constructing a 450,000-square-foot data center building to expand services for clients, including Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. A Phase III expansion could potentially kick off toward the end of this year, which would include a 1 million-square-foot building. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports of the Alphabet project and Phase II and Phase III of Meta's project.
In terms of geography, Meta's leading region for development is the West Coast, specifically Oregon. In the coming months, Meta expects to break ground on Phase I construction of a facility in Hillsboro, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The company also has a large complex in Prineville, near the center of the state. Buildings 10 and 11 would each have 450,000 square feet with two stories. Construction on both would begin this year, although some months apart, putting them on track to be completed next year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the report on the Hillsboro project, and Building 10 and Building 11 at the Prineville site.
While Alphabet and Meta occupy the first and third positions by project value, respectively, the second-place position belongs to Microsoft, which plans to break ground on more than $4.7 billion worth of data center projects in the U.S. this year. The Midwest and West Coast regions, each with more than $1 billion in planned projects, account for most of the company's planned spending.
In San Jose, California, Microsoft plans to begin work on a grassroot data center and accompanying microgrid. The data center would encompass 245,000 square feet, the first of two buildings planned for the site. An accompanying microgrid would include 224 natural gas-fired generators, each with a capacity of 0.45 megawatts (MW), resulting in a generating capacity of 100.8 MW for the data center facilities. Both projects are on track to break ground in the second half of this year and be completed in the summer of 2024.
