Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) recently reported more than 5,000 megawatts (MW) of battery-storage capacity is online and integrated into the state's electricity grid, a tenfold increase from the installed capacity in 2020. Industrial Info is tracking $21 billion worth of active battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in California.
The 5,000-MW benchmark was reached in early June, and as of July 1, total battery storage increased to 5,600 MW. CAISO noted 5,000 MW can provide enough electricity to power approximately 3.8 million homes for up to four hours before the batteries need to be recharged.
The independent system operator said the major driver for the influx in storage capacity has been storage procurement orders authorized by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) (San Francisco), requiring utilities add battery storage to their portfolios. In the recent press release, Gabe Murtaugh, storage sector manager for CAISO's market design group, said the CPUC aims to build out more than 10,000 MW in aggregate storage capacity on the grid by 2026.

Among the active BESS projects in California being tracked by Industrial Info are two stand-alone projects expected to kick off next year, with completion in 2025. NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) is developing the 400-MW Kola Energy Storage project near Tracy, which would tie in to PG&E Corporation's (NYSE:PCG) (Oakland, California) Tesla Substation in Tracy. Meanwhile, Hecate Energy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) is developing the 300-MW Humidor BESS in Los Angeles. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can read detailed reports on the Humidor and Kola projects.
Among projects under construction is Capital Dynamics Limited's (New York, New York) 200-MW, $200 million Avocet Battery Storage project, which would utilize Tesla Incorporated's (NASDAQ:TSLA) (Austin, Texas) "Megapack" large-scale energy-storage model. Rosendin Electric (San Jose) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services on the project, which is expected to wrap up in October. Click here for the project report.
BESS units are also being paired with new or existing solar plants, to provide power in times of high demand or when the sun isn't shining.
Industrial Info is tracking related projects, including Capital Dynamics' combined 300-MW Vikings solar-plus-storage project in Imperial County, about 110 miles east of San Diego. Construction of both the 150-MW solar farm and 150-MW BESS kicked off earlier this year, and completion is expected by yearend. Subscribers can read more information on the BESS and solar projects.
