Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--According to state data, if California existed as its own nation, it would be the fifth-largest economy in the world, and this shows in its industrial construction activity. Industrial Info is tracking more than $72 billion of projects under construction in the state. Thanks to some large transportation-systems projects, the Industrial Manufacturing Industry accounts for the lion's share of project value, coming in at more than $48 billion.

Projects for light rail and airports dominate activity in California's transportation sector, and sometimes projects that involve both types of transport, such as the construction of a people mover system from Los Angeles International Airport, which will connect the airport with the Metro Green light rail line two miles to the east. Construction kicked off in 2018 and entails constructing a 2.25-mile automated people-moving train system with approximately 11,600 feet of rail lines to connect the airport with a station and consolidated car-rental facility about two miles away. Six passenger stations are being built on the route. The project is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for the full report.

Also underway at the Los Angeles airport is the modernization of terminals 2 and 3. The project involves upgrading the Terminal 2 concourse, building new ticketing areas, performing apron improvements and constructing 830,000 square feet of new building space to ease congestion and provide enhanced connectivity between the two terminals. Construction is expected to be completed this summer. Subscribers can click here for more details.

California has some of the loftiest environmental goals of any U.S. state, and this is seen with a strong showing in the renewable energy and alternative fuels sectors. The City of San Francisco is underway with construction of a new biosolids digester and combined heat and power unit to help meet its green goals. The project is being constructed on a 47-acre site in the city, where existing buildings have been demolished, and new buildings totaling 200,000 square feet are being constructed that will facilitate the processing of 280,000 pounds per day of biosolids into 2 million cubic feet per day of biogas and 5 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity. Construction kicked off in 2020 and is expected to be completed in 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Alternative Fuels Project Database can click here for more information.

Major refiners also are getting in on the state's alternative fuels action. Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) (Houston, Texas) is underway with its "Rodeo Renewed" project in the San Francisco area, transforming its Rodeo Refinery to produce 680 million gallons per year of renewable diesel, renewable gasoline and sustainable aviation fuel from used cooking oil, fats, greases and soybean oil. Construction is set to wrap up next year.

Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) (Findlay, Ohio) is underway with the conversion of its refinery in Martinez, which ceased operations in April 2020 due to economic pressure brought on by the COVID-10 pandemic, to produce 730 million gallons per year of renewable diesel.

Solar power projects, often including battery energy storage systems (BESS) also are blossoming in the state. Examples include Intersect Power's (Beaverton, Oregon) Oberon facility in Desert Center, which will include 500 MW of solar power generation and a 500-MW BESS unit. Construction kicked off last summer and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Nearing completion is NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) Resurgence solar and BESS facility near Boron. The facility will use approximately 312,000 Jinko solar panels to provide a nameplate generating capacity of 138 MW, and an accompanying 115-MW BESS will provide energy when the sun isn't shining. Construction is expected to be completed in the near future. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for details of the Oberon project and click here more information on the Resurgence facility.

Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) accounts for more than $750 million worth of projects under construction in the state, including data centers and fulfillment centers. Among the company's largest California projects is a data center being constructed on a brownfield site in Santa Clara. An unused building has been demolished, making way for a three-story, 279,00-square-foot data center building with 60 MW of power. The facility will help facilitate use of Amazon's cloud data services in the region. Construction is expected to wrap up this summer. Subscribers can click here to learn more.
