Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Oregon shows a broad range in the types of projects under construction in the state, which include solar farms, hydropower upgrades and pharmaceutical-biotech projects. But accounting for nearly half of the value of the state's $3.1 billion in projects under construction are data centers coming from some of the biggest names in tech.
Among the largest data center projects in the state is Alphabet Incorporated's (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (Mountain View, California) complex in The Dalles, in the north of the state near the Washington border. The facility is being constructed on the site of a former aluminum plant. The project entails constructing a 164,000-square-foot data center building to expand the company's regional operational capacity. Construction kicked off last year and is expected to be completed in the second half of this year. Plans for an expansion are in the works, although this wouldn't begin until sometime next year. About 80 miles to the east, e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) is approaching completion of a grassroot data center in Boardman. General contractor Gray Construction Company (Lexington, Kentucky) broke ground on the facility in early 2020 and is expected to complete it this summer. Oregon also is seeing movement on the renewable energy front, particularly for solar power. Avangrid Renewables (Orange, Connecticut), part of Spanish company Iberdrola (Bilbao), in particular is underway with solar projects to help light up the state. In Antelope, Oregon, Avangrid is constructing the 140-megawatt (MW) Day Break solar energy center, which is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year.
In Maupin, Avangrid is constructing the Bakeoven solar and energy storage facility, which unusually will feature more battery energy storage capacity than nameplate solar generation. The solar plant will provide 60 MW of energy using Canadian Solar (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) panels, while a battery energy storage system (BESS) will provide 100 MW of power in times of high demand or when the sun isn't shining. Engineering, procurement and construction contractor IEA White Construction (Clinton, Indiana) is expected to wrap up construction later this year.

In other renewable sectors, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is underway with upgrades at three of Oregon's hydropower facilities. Among the projects are the replacement of a tailrace gantry crane at the Bonneville hydropower station in Cascade, electrical upgrades to a facility in Foster, and replacing or refurbishing the trashracks at the 2,480-MW John Day hydropower facility near Rufus. After the Industrial Manufacturing and Power industries, the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry rounds out the top three industries by value of the projects under construction in the state. Oregon State University is renovating a biological science building at its Corvalis campus. The project entails updating approximately 220,000 square feet of space, including four floors on the east side of the Cordley Hall building and five floors on the west side. The project will bring the facility up to the latest environmental specifications and includes installing 47 modular-design wet laboratories for enhanced research and instruction in the biological sciences, including zoology and botany. The project kicked off in mid-2020 and is expected to wrap up early next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pharma-Biotech Project Database can click here for the full report.
