GALWAY, IRELAND--May 25, 2021--Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Green hydrogen supplier Everfuel A/S (Herning, Denmark) has revealed plans for a 300-megawatt (MW) electrolyzer project powered by wind and solar power, next to the Fredericia refinery in Denmark.

The HySynergy Phase II involves a significant scale-up in the production of green hydrogen, planned for use in both zero-emission hydrogen transport and as green feedstock to various fuel refining processes. Approximately 20% of the green hydrogen produced at the facility will be dedicated to transport while 80% will be used as a feedstock for fuel refining. The new facility will enable a 214,000-ton reduction of annual CO2 emissions, equal to approximately 5% of Denmark's total CO2 emissions from transport.

Industrial Info also is tracking the company's HySynergy Phase I project, which aims to start construction this summer on a 20-MW electrolyser next to the same refinery, which is owned by Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE:RDS-A) (The Hague, Netherlands). Everfuel is investing 1.5 billion euros (US$1.8 billion) developing the HySynergy Phase I and II projects alongside a network of hydrogen stations, with the aim of creating a business capable of generating 1 billion euros (US$1.2 billion) per year from the sale of hydrogen before 2030.

The new facility also will provide oxygen for on-site carbon capture by an oxyfuel process and a 25% reduction of the Fredericia refinery's emissions by using the green hydrogen for production of gasoline, diesel, DME and M85 with a lower carbon footprint. The company said that the new phase could also include production of methanol.

"This is a truly unique project and a global showcase of cross sectoral PtX synergies, furthermore, posing a significant CO2 emissions reduction potential on both near- and long term," explained Jacob Krogsgaard, founder and chief executive officer of Everfuel. "Adding to the substantial here-and-now CO2 reduction potential from the planned 80/20 capacity distribution between refining and direct use in mobility, a gradual increase in hydrogen capacity used directly for land-based transportation may further increase the CO2 reduction up to an annual 450,000 ton, equal to the CO2 displacement from 500,000 electric cars."

Steen Wrist, Mayor of Fredericia.,welcomed the project: "Fredericia is an energy metropolis of Denmark. With that position comes the responsibility to contribute to Denmark's green transition, in which we see a great potential in the development of green fuels. The HySynergy project...is a good example of how we can contribute to reducing CO2 emissions in Denmark and help achieve the nationwide goal of 70% CO2 reduction by 2030."

In April, Everfuel announced the second phase of its H2 station roll-out plan, this time in Sweden. It aims to place 15 strategically positioned fueling sites for zero-emission transport by the end of 2023. Everfuel's Scandinavian green hydrogen fueling strategy for trucks, buses and cars will connect the main traffic corridors in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The Swedish network will comprise sites developed by Everfuel as well as fueling stations in the partly EU-funded Nordic Hydrogen Corridor initiative led by leading car makers and energy companies.
