Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Enbridge Incorporated (NYSE:ENB) (Calgary, Alberta) and EDF Renewables announced on Wednesday the first portion of generation at Ohio's largest solar plant is now operational, with a total of up to 577 megawatts (MW) expected to be in operation at the end of 2024. Industrial Info is tracking $13 billion worth of solar-generation projects in Ohio.
EDF Renewables is a subsidiary of Electricite de France (EDF) (Paris, France).
Phase 1 of the $695 million Fox Squirrel solar project in Madison County generates 150 MW of solar power, and Enbridge plans to reach a final investment decision (FID) on the remaining phases throughout 2024, assuming certain conditions are met. In a related press release, the companies said the project has secured 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) "with a strong investment grade counterparty for the full generation capacity." Among the solar-generation projects under construction in Ohio is Dominion Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) $250 million Atlanta Farms solar facility in Williamsport, which is expected to generate 200 MW from as many as 600,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels. Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm DEPCOM Power Incorporated (Scottsdale, Arizona) aims to wrap up the project in late 2024.
Dominion also is at work on its 170-MW, $221 million Phase II expansion and 300-MW, $300 million Phase III expansion of the Hardin Solar Plant in Alger, with the facilities expected to be operational in 2024 and 2025, respectively, adding generation to the existing 150-MW facility. Subscribers can learn more information from the Atlanta Farms, and Hardin Phase II and Phase III projects.
Also underway is DEPCOM Power's construction of Apex Clean Energy Incorporated's (Charlottesville, Virginia) $218 million Wheatsborough solar plant in Huron. Commercial operations are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025. Click here for the project report.
Industrial Info is tracking two grassroot solar projects from Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) planned to kick off in 2024. The proposed $340 million Pleasant Prairie solar farm in Franklin County would generate 250 MW, while the $200 million Vinton solar plant in McArthur would feature 125 MW of solar generation. Subscribers can read a detailed report on the Pleasant Prairie and Vinton projects.
To provide generation from Vinton to the grid, Invenergy must construct the new Vinton Substation and an accompanying transmission line that will run to the existing Elk Substation in Columbus. Click here for the related project report.
Ohio has a renewable portfolio standard (RPS) goal that 8.5% of the state's "electric distribution utilities or electric services companies must be generated from renewable energy sources by 2026," according to the Ohio Public Utilities Commission.
According to the most recent data (through third-quarter 2023) from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the state ranks 22nd in the nation in terms of installed solar capacity, up from 32nd in 2022. However, the SEIA also noted solar makes up 1.2% of the state's electricity mix.
