Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Florida is host to a broad range of industrial projects presently under construction, spanning sectors ranging from solar energy to pulp mills. Industrial Info is tracking more than $7.2 billion worth of projects that are presently under construction in Florida.
One of the state's biggest projects is the construction of a grassroot sales and distribution facility for Coca-Cola Beverages Florida LLC (Coke Florida) (Tampa, Florida). Coke Florida held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new 800,000-square-foot facility in the Greater Tampa area in the summer of 2022, with construction beginning shortly afterward. The new facility will include more than 685,000 square feet of warehousing and distribution space as well as more than 390,000 square feet for product packaging. According to a Coke Florida press release, the company's Tampa operations employ 800 people across sales, manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, fleet operations and more, and the new facility will bring these employees together on one campus. In addition, a state-of-the-art warehousing system will improve the speed and accuracy of operations. The project is expected to be completed in 2025. Florida is living up to its name as the Sunshine State with several solar power facilities being added within its borders, amounting to nearly $1.4 billion worth of investment. Leading the charge is Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) (Juno Beach, Florida), the primary Florida subsidiary of NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida), which has 12 solar projects underway, each rated at 74.5 megawatts (MW). Examples include the Caloosahatchee Solar Energy Center in Clewiston, a city in southern Florida that is also home to an under-construction pulp mill. The Caloosahatchee facility is being built on a 500-acre site and will feature approximately 250,000 solar panels. Engineering, procurement and construction contractor M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) has been at work on the project since the first half of 2023 and is expected to wind down construction in the coming months. Southeast Renewable Fuels LLC began construction on its new fiber pulp in Clewiston last summer. Clewiston is in the heart of Florida's sugar farming country, and upon completion, the facility will use mostly sugarcane bagasse to provide more than 300 bone-dry tons per day of bleached pulp from this agricultural field waste. According to the company's website, the bagasse feedstock will be harvested and delivered within a 35-mile radius of the plant, cutting down on the environmental impact of long transport. The plant is expected to be completed early next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pulp & Paper Project Database can click here for project details.
While Clewiston is getting a new solar facility, not all of Florida's power projects involve renewable energy. The City of Lakeland is repowering its C. D. McIntosh Power Station with the addition of six natural gas-fired reciprocating internal combustion engines (RICEs) with heat-recovery steam generators. Each RICE unit will be rated at 20 MW to provide a combined 120 MW of power. In 2022, demolition of three existing units at the power plant began, including older natural gas-, oil- and coal-fired units. The new engines are expected to be installed and operating by the summer of 2025. Subscribers can click here to learn more.
While the Power and Industrial Manufacturing industries occupy the top two positions for current project spending in Florida, the No. 3 place is taken by the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry. Two projects are focused on one of the prime health concerns in the U.S.: cancer. The University of Miami is underway with a large research facility for its Miller School of Medicine. The 12-story, 244,000-square-foot facility will be equipped to pioneer research and innovation in cancer research.
Another life science project focuses not on cancer research, but its treatment. The Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) is adding a 140,000-square-foot building to its campus in Jacksonville that will house the technology needed for cancer treatments including radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The facility has been under construction for about two years and is approximately at its halfway point.
