Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Greater Houston area in Texas covers 10,000 square miles across nine counties, making it home to a range of industries. Industrial Info is tracking about $15 billion worth of industrial projects that are under construction in the Houston metropolitan area.

The region is known as a hub of oil and gas activity, although its construction projects also include the Chemical Processing, Industrial Manufacturing and Power industries, among others. The Power Industry is buoyed by the addition of solar generation and battery-energy storage systems (BESS).

The oil and gas activity includes an $800 million natural gas liquids (NGL) project in Mont Belvieu, about 30 miles east of Houston on the Gulf Coast. Mont Belvieu is a hub for the storage, processing and distribution of NGLs.

ONEOK Incorporated (NYSE:OKE) (Tulsa, Oklahoma) is adding the MB-6 fractionator at its Mont Belvieu complex. The 125,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) unit is designed to extract NGLs from the Granite Wash, Cana-Woodford and the Eagle Ford shale plays to produce purity ethane. It will bring the complex's total site capacity to 525,000 BBL/d of ethane, propane, isobutane, normal butane and natural gasoline. Among the chemical projects underway in the Greater Houston area is Occidental Petroleum Corporation's (NYSE:OXY) (Houston) $1.1 billion conversion and expansion of its Battleground Chlor-Alkali Plant in La Porte. The project entails upgrading, modernizing and expanding equipment to increase the production of chlorine and caustic soda. Site work kicked off in April and completion is expected in late 2026. Subscribers can read more information on the Oxy project.

Also expected to wrap up in 2026 is Dow Incorporated's (NYSE:DOW) (Midland, Michigan) addition of a seventh polyethylene unit at its Plant B in Freeport. The new unit is designed to produce an estimated 600,000 tons per year of polyethylene. Subscribers can read more information on the Dow project.

Activity in Greater Houston's Power Industry is highlighted by projects aimed at adding solar-generation and BESS capacity. This includes the construction of TotalEnergies SE's (NYSE:TTE) (Courbevoie, France) Cottonwood Bayou Solar plant in Brazoria County, which will feature a 350-megawatt (MW) of photovoltaic solar capacity across two phases, as well as a 150-MW BESS unit. Commercial startup is planned for the end of the year. The project has a 12-year agreement in place to provide chemical company LyondellBasell (NYSE:LYB) (Rotterdam, Netherlands) with 195 MW of renewable energy. Meanwhile, the Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry is responsible for about $2.5 billion in under-construction activity in the area. This includes a project in Houston's medical center: construction of a $668 million Research Building 5 Addition at the south campus of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. On a 60-acre site, the 600,000-square-foot building will feature state-of-the-art facilities that house MD Anderson's strategic cancer research programs, including drug discovery and development. The highest-valued project underway in the area is the largest expansion in the 53-year history of George Bush Intercontinental Airport: a $1.5 billion project entails refurbishing Terminal D by demolishing the existing terminal and constructing a 780,000-square-foot terminal with new gates, among other work. In April, airport manager Houston Airports said the project is on track for completion this year. "The new international terminal represents a significant investment in the future of Houston Airports," said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports. "This project will allow us to accommodate a growing number of international flights and solidify Bush Airport's position as a premier global gateway." Click here to read the project report.
