Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--North American universities and colleges continue to invest hundreds of millions of dollars to beef up life-science research infrastructures. These construction projects vary widely in total investment value (TIV). A recent survey of all reported university-sourced capital projects found in Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database shows that the top 15 projects with a future kick-off date are valued at $3.8 billion.
Despite ruthlessly slashed state budgets across the country, virtually every capital plan sent up for approval to the respective governing boards includes at least one sizeable life-science project to add research capacity. In instances where the state cannot find room in its budget for these projects, a number of schools are seeking private financing to get the research facilities built.
The financial impact of these university projects becomes evident even when just considering the top 15 projects discussed here. Each project carries an Ivy League-worthy average TIV of $253 million. Beyond the top 10 discussed here, reported university-based construction projects range in TIV from several million dollars to update or create wet lab space in an existing building, to pricy monolithic research centers encompassing multiple buildings filled with a vast array of state-of-the-art equipment. Construction and equipment costs can sometimes approach $1,000 per square foot for sections of these new structures.

All of the referenced projects are forecast to begin construction sometime in the future, and are in various stages of planning, engineering or construction. The largest of these is Northwestern University's (Evanston, Illinois) $500 million planned investment into the Feinberg School of Medicine Biomedical Research Center. Designed by Perkins + Will (Chicago, Illinois), the first phase of what will be an eventual total build-out of 1.2 million square feet of biomedical research space, will be the construction of a 600,000-square-foot building. After years of planning and design changes, barring any major obstacles, the project will begin construction next year. Other team members include Affiliated Engineers (Madison, Wisconsin) and Thornton Tomasetti (Chicago).

Another of the mega projects is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) (Cambridge, Massachusetts) plan to invest $350 million to construct the MIT Nanotechnology Research Building (MIT.NANO 12). Designed by Wilson Architects (Boston, Massachusetts), the four-story, 200,000-square-foot research center will house prototyping areas, fabrication suites, materials growth labs, and support. Imaging technologies will be housed on a floor with robust vibration and electromagnetic interference mitigation technologies. A Computer-Aided Visualization Environment (CAVE) for viewing nanoscale structures will be included, as well as laboratory and instructional space for nanoscience, nanotechnology, life sciences and other interdisciplinary research. Turner Construction (Boston, Massachusetts) is the project CM/GC. Demolition of the existing building 12 is scheduled for early 2015, with construction of the new building to begin later in the year.

Illustrating the geographic proliferation of these large-scale university projects is the $200 million plan by the University of Lethbridge (Lethbridge, Alberta) to build a nearly 400,000-square-foot research building (LEED Gold) with laboratory and instructional space for biology, chemistry and other scientific fields. KPMB (Toronto, Ontario) and Stantec (Lethbridge, Alberta) are in in a joint venture serving as the Prime Consultants Design team, with PCL (Calgary) on board as construction manager. The project includes the construction of a utility/energy building to provide power and utilities to a number of campus buildings. Construction is set to launch in 2016.
